Guest guest
Hi, I remember someone online was talking about MSM and I found the web site she mentioned to purchase bulk MSM. I have two questions and was hoping for quick answers! 1) What is better, the MSM powder or flakes? 2) How do I prepare the MSM for use in a massage cream or oil? Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Anna, The quick answer is that you won't be able to use this in waterless preparations, as MSM isn't oil-soluble (as always, list folks, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). That said, either the flakes or powder are fine, but do look to see if your version can be used internally, as many of the best things to mix MSM with will draw it thru the skin and personally I'd prefer the food-grade MSM. To use it topically, dissolving in water for a 10% solution is recommended as the higher you go on the strength, the more likely your MSM will leave solution and recrystallize), and add to the water portion of a lotion or cream, etc, etc. If I wanted a massage product, I'd make up a lotion that would take awhile to absorb and make it on the thick side to help that. My MSM lotion uses emu oil and aloe butter, but it's not massage-thick. I'd alter the formula a bit for a thicker lotion by using some cocoa butter or other hard butter along with the aloe butter, or swap it completely out and use 10% aloe juice (any more than that would tax the preservative) in the water phase. If this is clear as mud, please email me and I'll try to be clearer. Guest guest
Hi Anna, I prefer the powder. As far as dissolving it, I have found that it's best to do it in water. I haven't had much luck dissolving it in oil. When I dissolve it in water, I put it in a microwave friendly bowl and nuke it for about 5 minutes. I stir until I see it dissolving and then put it in for another 5 minutes. Heat does not bother MSM and I find that when the water is very hot, it dissolves easily. I then set it off to the side and melt my oils and such for my lotions or creams and by the time it's ready to pour the water in, it's cooled down a bit. I have not had my MSM recrystalize on me and I use it at 14% of the water. Guest guest
I just made a salve with infused oils. The MSM dissolved easily in the hot oil. C-M
Guest guest
C-M, Will you please let me know if it stays in the oil???? I have a formula I'd love to add MSM to (can't take it internally so I use it topically a lot) but it's a balm. TIA, Serra Christa Maria wrote: > I just made a salve with infused oils. Guest guest
Hmmmm . . . MSM is water soluble and I have never gotten it to dissolve in oil. Combine the MSM in water or aloe juice (no greater than 15% MSM) and make you cream as usual. This stuff works!! I also add tea tree oil and peppermint eo. -Helen I just made a salve with infused oils. The MSM dissolved easily in the hot oil. Guest guest
Helen, As I said, the MSM dissolved in the oil, at least that's how it looked to my eyes... After the salve cooled last night, I put some on my ankle, for I had bumped it rather badly yesterday morning. The salve looked smooth, but when I put it on, I could feel it was a tiny bit gritty... Soooo, I dunno However, something is doing the job, for the ankle was back to normal this morning, but than it might have been the comfry?? Guest guest
Perhaps there is a new kind that dissolves in oil . . . I have used the same brand since I started making it right after the first Blue Stuff ads appeared. Also, perhaps the amount of water/aloe you used helped it dissolve. I will be interested in hearing how your next batch works. Even using water/aloe, it will get somewhat gritty if the proper ratios are not used. Just add some warmed distilled water and see if the gritty feel disappears. I think it is the MSM, Christa. Comfrey is a great herb and helps repair skin but the MSM is the pain reliever in my experiences. I make tons of the stuff and have many arthritis and fibro customers. I even used it when I went on vacation one year and wore a NEW pair of shoes that caused my bunion to hurt like crazy. To the point where I could no longer keep up with everyone else. Went to the ladies room and rubbed the cream into the bunion. Finished the tour without any more pain. It is terrific for pain relief. . . . no doubt. -Helen Helen, As I said, the MSM dissolved in the oil, at least that's how it looked to my eyes... Guest guest
Helen, I don't mind that little bit of gritty feeling, as long as it does the job. There also is no residue that looks like grittyness to the naked eye, so something must dissolve. My batches of green goop came out wonderful yesterday. I do not sell my medicines, but for the goop , I have a long line of people who hope I make it.. C-M
