RE: What to use on a burn (why mustard works)

We homeopaths might argue it's an example of the use

of the " Law of Similars " (LOS) with a gross substance

rather than a homeopathically prepared substance such

as a " remedy " .

Basically, the Law of Similars states " that which can

cause a symptom can cure a symptom " and that's a very,

very basic explanation of the " LOS " as the other

homeopaths on the list know. But an example of the

use of this " LOS " (besides the mustard for burns

advice) is that One of the big remedies for burns is a

homeopathic preparation of Urtica Urens (stinging

nettle).

Of course there's lots and lots more to it than that,

and homeopathy uses many more remedies for burns that

just Urt-U, but this is just one example to answer why

a " hot " substance like mustard can work to cure a

burn. One of my favorite teachers of homeopathy

claims that hot water also works to cure burns. I

have not had occasion to try that yet, so I cannot

comment of my own knowledge.

OUCH!!! For me, any time I have even a little bit of a burn, it hurts MUCH

worse when exposed to hot or even warm water, such as for washing dishes.

Good to see you here.

Ice immediately when you have just a small burn, keep the ice on it

until it's all melted, than some more and lavender...

Hi Renee,

Yes, it certainly seems contra-intuitive, and yet if

you study homeopathy as I have for the past 8 years or

more, there is NO doubt but what Hahnemann's Law Of

Similars ( " LOS " ) does indeed describe at least part of

a Natural Law of the Universe.

Some say it's because the remedies are so dilute (and

potentized) that it works, and yet again, there's a

LOT of evidence in the historical record that " crude "

subtances, very low potencies (diluted but with some

crude substance left) and/or " mother tinctures " (1:9

ratio of herbal tinctures a/k/a 1x) do also work

according to what one would suspect having applied the

logic of the " LOS " . There are some incredible stories

in the literature of homeopathy of situations in life

responding to the " LOS " as well.

Matthew Wood has a WONDERFUL herbal book (The book of

Herbal Wisdom, Using Plants as Medicines, ISBN

1-55643-232-1) that outlines some of these uses along

with case studies from his own and other's files

(ancient & modern alike), including some of past

homeopathic " greats " (James Compton Burnett, Dorothy

Shepherd, etc.)

If you're interested in homeopathy and want to pursue

further learning along these lines, please ask me for

book and other references (there's a lot online for

free). As this is not a homeopathy list, I hesitate

to take up much " bandwidth " on this subject.

I have no doubt that homeopathy works. My father even uses arnica in a

homeopathic gel form for his arthritis. I make and use flower essences. It's

just that the only experience I have had between hot water and burns is that

burns hurt MUCH worse when hot water is applied. That's the part of your

message that I didn't quite get. I'm sure your teacher must know what she

was talking about, and probably had some other experience than I have, but

as for me--I'll stick with ice water! <grin>
