Guest guest
Hey Chris! Can you tell I'm playing catch up on email?? Anyway, I saw this question and couldn't help but respond becaue it brought back such incredible memories! I grew up on a 10-acre cattle farm and my daddy had a half-acre garden. He started growing a small amount of sugar cane, because he LOVED molasses, and wanted to see if he could make some. Well, it turned out so well that he and a friend of ours at the time, went in together and planted TONS of sugar cane to make and sell molasses. My daddy was a master at rigging things (and also reinvented the phrase 'use it up, wear it out, and find another use for it')...and he made the sugar cane press to squeeze the juice out of the cane. I can remember nights of 'Molasses Parties' (I was only about 10 at the time) where we would build a big bonfire and pile sleeping bags and blankets on top of the MOUND of cane peelings and watch them squeeze the cane juices into big vats. Then they would cook the juices till it turned thick and dark, turning it into molasses. In the meantime though, we always had small bits to chew on! Good stuff!! Those times were so much fun! My daddy died when I was 12 from leukemia, but I hold on to memories like that...even though I still wish to this day (at 31) that he was still here to do those kinds of things with my son. I try to pass down bits of my daddy as I can to him, though. Thanks for taking me back down memory lane, Chris! Hugs, Kati
