Howdy folks,

Anyone who can - tell me ALL y'all know about growing and using sugar

cane. I have sugar cane growing in my side yard and I'm SO excited. I

knew my neighbors had a 2 story sugar cane plant on the other side of

the fence between the houses, and a couple weeks ago I noticed some

really tall funky looking patch of " grass " that I let be and asked my

neighbor if she could tell me if that too was sugar cane (since it

looked so similar to her plants, just much smaller). Well, she confirmed

that it indeed is sugar cane and apparently the former owners had it

growing like mad there and just chopped it all down when they sold the

house to clear out the " jungle " that was growing along the side of the

house. Well, its back now and I want to have fun with it :) I asked my

neighbor what she does with it (she hails from Cuba) and she said I need

a special juicer to juice it and she had no idea if a Champion juicer

would do the job, and she says they just suck on it ... Anyone else have

any ideas ... or growing tips?

of rain today/tonight - our neighborhood bayou is quite full!)

" ALL " I know? Do I get points deducted if I keep some secrets to myself? hee.

That's a hint. It grows madlyall by itself, the owners didn't help it at

all, and you will need a good machete to keep it in bounds. Ahem. Define

'fun'. I'm thinking of some salacious Latino sugar cane jokes.

I asked my

The juicer she's talking about looks like a big aluminum box, and you feed

the cane into teeth like a shredder (for the garden) and it then presses

the pulp. It's sold all over Miami as 'guarapo', aka fresh cane juice.

You need to make sure you have the 'soft' (usually the 'black' cane) for

chewing, otherwise you'll ruin your teeth -- and your kids. Nothing faster

to ruin teeth, anyway, than chewing sugar cane, not even eating sugar on a

spoon. The combo of chewing and friction and sucking on the cane really

ruins teeth.

You can boil the chopped cane to make sugar syrup. Nobody here processes it

into crystals at home, as it's a lot easier to go to Publix and get a five

pound bag for a dollar.

The rest, " ALL " I know, and the ahem, 'secrets', I'll keep to myself.

You're too young and innocent to know " ALL " .

Oh. OK. I'll tell you one secret:

Peel it. Chop it into skewers. Skewer meat or veggies on it. Grill. Yum.

OK one more secret:

For a fun party, chop them into little swizzle sticks, put a cherry or

chunk of pinepple on one end.

OK, this is the last, as i said, you're too young and innocent:

Skewer little hor d'oeuvres on the swizzle-stick size ones. After a few

drinks, the guests will begin to perform amusing acts with them.

Hi Chris,

Lucky you! Its a major crop where I live and to have it free is like manna from

heaven.

These days it is summer here in Bhopal, India and there are sugar cane juice

stalls at every ten yards on the roads. For the juice, you need to pass it

through a roller press kind of thing. If you can get the juice, put a pinch of

rock salt and powdered black pepper in it, lots of ice, and a twist of lemon and

swig. Its the most refreshing thing you've ever had.

Another thing that you can do with the juice is to squeeze half a lemon in about

a lt. of juice and put it on a medium fire and allow it to boil. After a while,

you'll get some stuff floating on the top. Keep spooning it off till the juice

becomes clear. Separately, boil about 50 grams of rice in water and add it to

the boiling juice. Boil this mixture for about ten minutes. Taste it for

sweetness. If it is not sweet enough, add some jaggery to it. Maybe brown sugar

would also do.

Cool it to room temperature and eat with a dash of cream. Sure is different from

anything you've had before.

Enjoy.

The food is superb (hey, fresh herbs and fruits from the garden make

everything wonderful) and the company is a great mix of Caribbean, Latin

and East Coast. Loud! And when those sugar cane skewers start flying......

Hey Christine,

I remember as a kid going down to Sugarland (where the Sugar factory was)

and they had some sugar cane fields. They would let us cut some down and we

would just chew on it and suck out the sugar. It was a great thing to keep

us kids quiet for awhile anyway until the sugar kicked in!! :)

I remember they used to have it at the Farmer's market too. I don't think

they have it anymore, but really the only thing we would do with it is chew

it down and suck on it.

I know that didn't help much, but it was a nice memory!! :)
