Bug repellent....:)

I am one of those people that has this big sign on my forehead that

attracts bugs.

Also have gotten is serious trouble from bug bites in my life. And yes,

I've tried the B Vitamins, nutritional yeast..you name it..they just

see me coming..

Spring has sprung in northern Michigan and just when you want to go

mushrooming or plant your garden, the blackflies come out..

Nasty buggers that like to hit my ankles., make them swell and go purple.

Seems whatever works for Mosquitos does not phase the black flies.

Fresh wormwood, crushed in your hand and rubbed over the parts of your

body that the bugs love most will also work well. Always have a pot

with wormwood by my backdoors. It also helps to prevent fleas getting on

your pets, by rubbing them down with wormwood.

Should a black fly dare zap you, apply ice and a mix of rosehip oil

with heli and lavender, add a dab of chamomille.

However , 4 thieves vinegar liberally applied every hour or even more,

does work to distract them.

For Mosquitos catnip oil does a great job.

Marge has a Skeeter beater formula she has shared before, that also

works well, if you are not a catlover..:)

So, what to do if you get stung?

For bee stings etc. a cut onion works about better than anything else.

That , ice and some lavender oil will take down the pain, swelling,

discomfort in no time.

For mosquito bites, meat tenderizer ( doesn't matter what flavor), the

inside of a banana peel, mud, will also help,

As well as lavender oil.

If you are out in the boonies and get zapped, a chewed plantain leaf

and the chewed mess applied to your bite will give instead relief.

Plantain is really as good as benadryl, IMHO.

I've made a green gop for years that is very popular with my neighbors

and friends, especially for the ones that have small kids.

I slow infuse in a double boiler:

handful of fresh plantain leaves

handful of c fresh comfrey leaves

1/2 handful of calendula blossoms

When it has a dark rich color, I strain and add enough beeswax to thicken.

before the beeswax sets, I add a few drops of lavender EO, prick open

the content of a Vit.E capsule and add a few drops of infused Balsam

Poplar oil.

For mushrooming , I have made myself an outfit out of old sheer

curtains. I work without patterns. But a pattern like a jogging suit

would do, liberally cut, very blousy, extending the arms and legs, so

one cut pull them over , finished with elastic. The neckline is a large

loose tube cowl, that fits over the head, with a drawstring. You look

silly, but it works. I dyed the bugsuit with teabags and it made it

like a camouflage suit..:)

In summer we get nasty flies that like to eat your ankles , arms and

head. Going foraging, I would wear a light nylon jacket with a hood

and wear old plastic bread bags under my socks..

* 4 thieves

Nice story ,nice vinegar infusion, sure when you google, recipes will

come up..:)

I just throw handfuls of

wormwood

rosemary

thyme

sage

lavender buds

into ACvinegar

let it steep for a good week

add a bunch of crushed cloves of garlic, steep some more and strain.

some recipes call for rue, but the wormwood will do as good a job.

Put in spray bottles and you also can clean with it.

You smell like a salad dressing and if it would not be for the wormwood,

I even would use it as a salad dressing :)

Speaking of bug bites, guess who woke up with 12 of them this morning. I'm

allergic to mosquito bites, so I don't think it's those.

Just changed the sheets 2 days ago, didn't see anything on them when I made

the bed.

My Mom tells me it's my Scottish blood that attracts them, Funny thing tho,

it was so hot here last night, that I slept in my nickers and a t-shirt, lay

ontop of the sheets ( Martin, you ok? Don't wanna get you too excited or

anything...LOL). Anyway, all the bites are where my bod was covered, no

bites at all on my arms, legs, etc...

Weird huh?

Carol,

Sounds like those tiny little spiders that like to crawl in bed with

people...

They usually bite when they feel stuck like under clothes.

Plantain works very well for those.

I've got no Scottish blood, but boy do the bugs like me too..:)
