Guest guest
Hi San I too am like you in that I keep cooking oils, nuts, flours, etc in the fridge. IMHO its not necessary to keep MOST essential oils in the fridge. Just in a relatively cool place, away from direct sunlight, away from heat, and with as little head space in the bottle as possible. That being said - the exceptions are the citrus oils and the blue oils, like blue chamomile and yarrow ... those should go in the fridge. The oils you have in plastic should be transferred out of the plastic and into (dark) glass ASAP! Never store EO's in plastic and especially never store absolutes in plastic. Also, never store your EO's with a rubber dropper top. The oils will eat away at the plastic and rubber and its not a pretty sight As far as I'm concerned, all hydrosols should be stored in the fridge. I have one refrigerator here dedicated exclusively to hydrosols, fixed oils and the type of essential oils I mentioned above. Its such a fun fridge *lol* *Smile* Chris (list mom - trudging along to go have some Earl Grey Tea to help my brain wake up for the day http://www.alittleolfactory.com dandeliongirl6 [san6] Could someone tell me if it's necessary to keep these different oils cold in the fridge, because I read that somewhere, but cannot find anymore information about it. I always keep any kind of oil, cooking, medicinal, even nuts and seeds cold so they do not go rancid. I don't know if distilled oils are the same or not. They are in glass containers, some in looks like aluminum. Few, plastic. Thanks in advance, San
Guest guest
> and with as little head space in the bottle as possible. So if they are in a large container with space above them, I should transfer them to a smaller bottle, like amber glass? > The oils you have in plastic should be transferred out of the plastic > and into (dark) glass ASAP! They came in these containers. thanks a lot, San
Guest guest
Thanks, Butch for that explanation. I have transferred the oil into an amber glass bottle, but unfortunately, it wasn't until I reread your message that I saw the part about them needing to be sterile, and this was just washed. If I keep them refrigerated, how long do you think it will be before it molds? And, I know you feel that they should be in dark bottles, but I bought some a couple years ago from a good company (I think) EOU, and they said it was not necessary. So, I don't know how pure or strong these still are. One ,Jojoba oil,is also in 16 oz.metal can, and I also did not refrigerate that. Is it still good, doyou think? Or will metal last longer? thanks, san > Short term storage of Hydrosols and Cold/Expeller Pressed Oils in the > Food Grade Approved Plastic Bottles will not harm them .. but as it says > on my site .. for longer storage they should be placed in sterile glass > containers with sterile caps. Guest guest
Butch,That helps a lot; I'm just learning about eo's, and even though I've had them for awhile, still haven't had time to know how to use them much, and they're just getting older. Maybe I should get a good learner's book that tells how to make up formulas and practical everyday uses for them. In the meantime, you are a good teacher . thanks, san
Guest guest
Hey Sandra, > Thanks, Butch for that explanation. Welcome fer'shur. > I have transferred the oil into an amber glass bottle, but unfortunately, > it wasn't until I reread your message that I saw the part about them needing > to be sterile, and this was just washed. Might not be a problem .. depends on how many critters are in the water you used to wash .. and if it was allowed to COMPLETELY dry afore use. > If I keep them refrigerated, how long do you think it will be before it > molds? Maybe never .. the spores have to get in to grow .. no spores no mold. > And, I know you feel that they should be in dark bottles, but I bought > some a couple years ago from a good company (I think) EOU, and they > said it was not necessary. Yes .. I have read that bovine excrement .. from someone who KNOWS BETTER .. or at least, based on his education should know! > So, I don't know how pure or strong these still are. Purity is simply a matter of not introducing critters .. strong is simply a matter of the thickness of the glass. > One, Jojoba oil, is also in 16 oz.metal can, and I also did not > refrigerate that. Is it still good, do you think? It will be unless you contaminated it while using it. > Or will metal last longer? Nothing is less porous than glass .. metal (actually what you have is spun aluminum) is used to ship kilos .. and stainless steel (sometimes aluminum) is what we get the big batches in direct from the still. The answer to your question is NO .. but it will not last for less time either .. IF .. it has not been contaminated. It is not the container that is so important (except plastic for EO .. that is a NO NO) .. but rather how the Hydrosol/CP/Expeller Oil is handled .. no intro of critters then no critters to grow. One could probably keep most Hydrosols in the Plastic Shipping Bottles for a year or so with no problem .. a few, like Rosemary and Oregano should be transferred to glass in a month or so .. and Lemon Myrtle will not do well after a week or so. Here in Turkey, the super markets sell Oregano Hydrosol in the fruit juice section .. some brands are in glass and some are in plastic. But the Turks who buy it will consume a liter in 2-3 weeks easily .. entire families use it. > thanks, > san Welcome fer'shur.
