I have enjoyed the numerous messages I have received and don't want to be just a reader, I want to participate also. I am thinking of starting up a business, does any one have any suggestions on getting started? I have a job at a nursing home and some of my coworkers are interested in my products and have purchased a few items. Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appriecated. Hi, I would use your name but you did not sign your email so I will just have to just say hi. 1. Do thorough research online and locally for what is selling and try to find a uniques niche for yourself. 2. Find local resources to help you with all the planning. SCORE is a group of retired business people that help others start their own business. You will need a business plan and the small business admin and people at SCORE can help you with this and many other things you need to know. 3. Get all your business license, state tax number for resale and your federal number too. 4. Open a separate checking account for you business. 5. When doing up your budget make sure you have enough money to keep your business running through the first 6 months at least. This is your trial and error time-frame and you want to cover all your expenses in case you don't sell too much when starting out. 6. Make sure you have plenty of money for advertising. This is the only thing that is going to help you become successful in your chosen endeavor. Those are the main points that I can think of right now. I am working on the business plan and trying to find out all the expenses before I try to complete all the expenses for the plan. The man at the seminar said not to get the license until the last minute because the state of Ohio feels if you have the license you must be selling something...Like you are a success before you even get started with anything else. As for patience I work in a nursing home I feel I have that by the barrels. I was just caught on the hop, I was always scrambling to make sure I had enough candles, that they were packaged properly, all priced, and I went NUTS! This year will be a different story! You already got some really good suggestions from Kathleen and Cheryl in answer to your question. Good luck on the new business endeavor! I'd think that now is a good time to get your organization down and product line all figured out and perfected. Then prepare to sell stuff for the holidays - maybe at work, holiday craft shows, on-line, etc .. that way you get your feet wet during the busy season. It is easier that way usually.
