Under HIPAA regs, US health care providers who engage in standard

electronic transactions (such as health insurance claims) must obtain

and use a National Provider Identifier (NPI) by May 23, 2007.

 

The use of this identifier will soon become as ubiquitous as social

security numbers and employer identification numbers. Even if you

aren't a HIPAA-covered entity, you will soon find it necessary in the

course of your transactions with other providers and with payers.
