Guest guest
TG: When I was first out of school 7 years ago, the MDs & DOs who do this with little training bothered me. But you will soon realize as I did that they do not get the results we do and they lose patients. You don't have to worry about their competition. If anything the MDs and DOs are a boon to the profession because they are raising the awareness of the public. Their loss is our gain! Their patients will come your way. You simply can't do the job right if you don't know what you are doing! So Chill. Guest guest
The problem with the Chiro's, DO's and MD's that are not properly trained doing acupuncture is they not only get poor results, but the patient is sure that acupuncture doesn't work for them, since after all, it did no good when their " Doctor " did it! This kills our credibility and adds fuel to the fire for those who want us out of their way. I have a cancer patient who checked out acupuncture a few years ago and found a chiro who did acupuncture and was listed on her insurance plan. He told her that acupuncture would not help her at all. She figured she had done her homework and did not look further for help for almost two years. Imagine if she had found a good acupuncture physician instead. Sigh...... Lee Tritt, AP, OMD, Dipl. Guest guest
Dear Eclea, I am not much worried about competition because I have enough " old " patients and I advertise in different places. My concern is if someone takes a serious course such as acupuncture, should take and pass some sort of qualification exam. Also, I understand that the doctors can do injections (prolo-, mesotherapies...) which in their mind (probably) are more complicated that " just " dry needling... Look at Upledger Insitute. To be aloud to promote their technique in your practice you need to be qualified by taking series of courses and exams. Or massage therapies...Either massage is a part of the curriculum in the school or a special school with exams... Tatiana G.
Guest guest
Acudoc: I understand your concerns, but. . . I don't think there are enough of them out there to be hurting our profession. Acupuncture has the most respect of all alternative therapies . . . even more so than chiropractic. Do you see chiropractors working in hospitals? Do you see chiropractors working in pediatric clinics (I am in one)? We have to stop being so fearful and use our energy to make the most of what we have with the training available. In the meantime, I think acupuncturists should support & encourage schools offering doctoral training so we can meet the educational standards of " mainstream " medicine. Have a great day!
