Guest guest
Dear friends, colleagues and teachers, About a half a year ago I wrote to you about the experience of treating a patient on her last day before passing away. Now I want to share with you the wonderful experience of treating a patient the day before she gave birth. Wednesday evening, my associate, (who is a chiropractor) called me frantically: A patient of his was more than a week overdue, and would I be able to use acupuncture and Chinese medicine to induce labor? With His (not the chiropractor's) help, I said yes, and met the couple at my office at 10:30 PM. This was a 35 year old mother of 6. As she was late they had attempted unsuccessfully to induce her by giving her a large dose of Pitocin, IV, the previous week. Now she was scheduled the following morning to go back to the hospital and give the pitocin another go. Her face was pale, she had big black bags under her eyes, terrible low back pain with crepitus and her hands and feet were ice cold. She had mild contractions but also had muscle spasms in her back and legs. Her tongue was pale, with a thin white coat, her pulses were slippery, generally thready, slow and choppy. I needled LI 4, LV3, Sp6, St36, UB 60, GB21, Kd 3 and K7 and Sp9. I also taught her husband to Moxa K1, 3,6,7, Sp6 & 9 and St36, which he did while I was needling and treating with CranioSacral therapy (CST). I asked her if she had a tendency to be anemic and she said that she was. I therefore gave her Si Wu Tang in powder form, and told her to take it every four hours that she was awake. She commented that she felt like she was awoken from sleeping after the first dose. I also asked her to take 1/3 teaspoon of magnesium citrate three times a day. I applied strong stimulation on the reducing points, each for about 30 seconds, and retained the needles for about 40 minutes, after which I removed them and applied CST, to her abdomenal cavity, the area of her liver, her thoracic inlet (or outlet if you prefer), her occiput and her sacrum. While releasing her sacrum and pelvis, I felt the hips were rotated and the presence of adhesions in the area of her hips (particularly the left hip), When I checked, her left leg was 1 " longer than her right leg. After releasing the sacrum, hips, inguinal canal and pelvis, the leg length was equal and the back pain was gone. After 2 hours she was relaxed, the bags under the eyes were gone, her face had a color, and the muscle spasms and back pain were gone. The result? Nothing! She went to the hospital the next day and they again insisted on inducing with Pitocin. I told her that Pitocin is a synthetic form of Oxytocin, which she can stimulate the production thereof by stimulating her nipples. Still nothing happened. Yet, she had had a wonderful night sleep (the first one in 4 days), the baby was not in any distress at all, and as far as I was concerned, was just not ready to come. Finally, at 2am this morning she went into labor in earnest and an hour later had her easiest birth yet, without any complications. She's doing wonderfully, and the baby hasn't stopped smiling since birth. Why? because he was born when he was ready, not when his doctors wanted him to be. Mazal tov (congratulations!) Congratulations Yahuda, I too had the honor of being present for one of the most spiritual births I have ever attended. A 37 yo woman first pregnancy was 43 weeks 2 days in gestation when they called me this week to induce labor. They picked me up from my office about 1.5 hours from their home. I gave caulophylum 30c in the car on the way. They told me she had had 3 sonograms in the last two weeks, everything and the baby was normal. (They left out that on all three times the allopaths were trying to strong arm her to go to the hospital and have labor chemically induced and probably a Cesarean because they were afraid I would not treat her.) Her tongue was pale, with a thin white coat, scalloped. Her pulses were slippery, generally rapid. BP 140/94 P: 85 although she had just climbed 15 steps a few minutes before I took the BP. She normally ran 180/68-74 during the pregnancy. She had never gotten morning sickness or other horrible problems with her pregnancy. Her biggest disappointment was when they got the news it was a girl and not a boy. They went into a 2 weeks mourning grief period which may have affected the baby. Now they desire a girl with all of their heart. We opened the session in prayer after clearing the energies of the room and house with the whole family and me. I'm not sure of all the prayers as the grandparents only spoke Spanish and I don't. The parents are bilingual but spoke to each other mostly in Spanish. I needled LI 4, LV3, Sp6, St36, UB 60, GB21, Kd 3 and Sp9. Mild contractions started. At this time I added ear seeds for shen men, uterus, spleen and endocrine for stimulation as desired later on. She was so excited when I told her she could eat a full dinner. The midwife I work with insists that the ladies in labor continuously drink water, smoothies, super greens and electrolytes and eat anything else they desire like popsicles, watermelon, and even chicken and rice or other foods they are craving. (Yes she poops during the labor but that is a sign the baby is coming soon. We just clean her up and continue with the labor. It is a natural process even if it can be messy at times. We had everything in the birthing/baby's room we needed. She had an attached bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub. She was free to change locations at will from the bed or floor to the tub. She was in control of when the music was on or not, the amount of light in the room and who was in the room at any given time. After dinner we put on music of her choice and we danced to get her hips moving and allow the baby to go to the correct position. About 1.5 hours after the first treatment BP 127/85 P 78 slippery. I needled R4 downwards and BL 31 and 32. Within 15 minutes the contractions came on and were continuous for the remainder of the labor however they started at 10 - 12 minutes got down to 2 minutes and then went to 6 minutes and weaker before I revived the labor with homeopathy. At this point (pun intended) I tried to needle R 4 and BL 31 & 32 again but she had to urinate each time within seconds so I used acupressure from here on out on all of these points as needed: LI 4, LV3, Sp6, St36, UB 60, GB21, Kd 3 and K7 K1 and Sp9 and ear points. We did compressions on the hips and her do squats with some of the contractions or lie on one side or the other with pillows to support her. We also danced during the labor and had her raise one leg up on the tub or bed while standing and being supported by her husband or the midwife or myself. The baby's base fetal heart rate (FHR) was in the 150's but then she went into distress down into the low 140's. I gave carbo veg 30C and within a few minutes the FHR normalized. We also changed positions and she got on all fours and started rocking motions. Later the FHR soared to upper 180's. although mom appeared calm and collected I felt the baby was terrified and I gave aconite 30c and brought the rate down to 170's I repeated in 5 minutes and it came down to the 160's and stayed there for 15 minutes. I gave Aconite 200C one wet dose and the FHR normalized. We used warm compresses with clary sage and ginger essential oils to help relax and open up the perineum. The labor was long totaling over 20 hours. At one point she was really exhausted along with the rest of us. I gave gelsemium to all of us including hubby and midwife. We all perked up but not the patient. Then I noticed she had increased thirst asking for water, cran-grape juice and a strawberry/banana smoothie within 20 minutes. Gelsemium keynotes dull droopy, tired, exhausted, slow weak contractions and thirstless. I asked if she was drinking because we were forcing fluids or if she was thirsty. She was thirsty I had given the wrong remedy. Kali Phos tired, exhausted, slow weak contractions, thirsty. One dose Kali Phos 200C revived the contractions and her energy. She delivered a beautiful baby girl 7 lbs 10 oz, 21 inches long with a 14.5 inch head diameter (ouch. The most a woman can open up to deliver vaginally is 15 inches in diameter. That's why the labor was so long. Yes she tore during delivery. There was never any screaming or yelling or accusing the husband of getting her in this condition. She only yelped about 5 times before changing her position and pressing the ear seeds and becoming more comfortable again. Surprisingly no yelps when she tore. The husband was at her side every moment pushing on her legs, her ear seeds, massaging or doing acupressure as instructed, getting her drinks. If she asked if it was hot in there he said if you're hot I'm hot, how much air do you desire. (They were not using the AC even though the temps were in the upper 80's outside.) He encouraged her and panted and pushed with her throughout the labor. I gave him Arnica 200C along with mom after the birth because he worked so hard and strained so much (grin). Arn is good for over exertion, bleeding, sore bruised feelings and a whole lot more. We give the baby Arn for the squeezing of the head through the birth canal and then other remedies PRN. The baby had swallowed a lot of merconium and was grunting and breathing in the 90's and was still blue. One dose Carbo Veg 30C and she pinked up normally was very alert and I swear she looked at each one of us directly in the eye. Her breathing was still labored. I gave 2 doses of Antimonium Tart 30C 5 minutes apart and the labored breathing was better but not normal. I bumped it up to one dose of Antimonium Tart 200C and the breathing normalized. We remained on site for over 6 hours post birth to make sure the respirations remained normal and they did. The midwife stitched up mom and everyone was happy and healthy. Prayers and toning ushered in this beautiful baby. Afterwards they were so appreciative of being given the opportunity to deliver at home when so many had told them they could not. The midwife I work with is also an instructor of midwifery. Her students had been told that there was no way she would deliver at home by the MD on call for all of the midwife's births. I bet they are all surprised. I am so honored to have been a part of this. The week before a friend of mine was admitted to hospice. I used the Spirit points PRN and gave Arsenicum 200c. I repeated the treatment the day after the birth and my friend smiled went to sleep and passed in her sleep of cancer. That too was beautiful and created great reflection on my part as a participant in the birthing and releasing of life on planet earth in less than 24 hours.
