Samra advertises a DAOM, along the lines of the new, ACAOM standard. Samra's web site doesn't mention a PhD. It does claim to be the " the oldest school of Oriental Medicine in the United States " . As does the New England School of Acpuncture ( " the oldest school of acupuncture and Oriental medicine in the United States, ...founded in 1975 ... " ). Both Maoshing Ni and Daoshing Ni (YoSan Univ) also claim this credential (PhD Samra). The patriarch of this family, Hua-Ching Ni, also claims (in his YiJing book) that his family descends from the Huang Di (Yellow Emperor). He also holds a Ph.D in OM from Samra. The certificate he has on the wall of his practice - if I remember correctly - is dated early 70's.... I am not sure whether this degree is actually accredited these days.... Guest guest Posted April 6, 2007 Report Share Posted April 6, 2007 Here we go again with these older OMD/PhD that were given way back when at several of the CA schools. It was around the 1980's that the CA programs had to drop these and accept the ACAOM standards (Master's degree) and get the federal student loan aid attached with it. The CA Acupuncture College had several campuses back then and these eventually gave rise to some of the schools we hear of today (Santa Barbara College, Pacific College-San Diego). These OMD's were in many ways similar to a PhD, as there was a thesis involved. Today's Samra is starting to offer the new doctorate degree for post grad (DAOM) and I think the first class will start in May of 2007. The emphasis is on pain. These new programs have a lot of integrative work with western healthcare facilities like hospitals, clinics, etc. Just an FYI, these OMD programs were recognized by the CA BPPVE, the authority when it comes to education in CA. ALL OM programs in CA must have this or they cannot operate. CA statutes does recognize that one who graduated from one of these OMD programs can use this title in advertising along with LAc.
