Guest guest
Does anyone know if any of our national organizations has a public relations person writing and consulting with organizations like this site to help clarify and correct the impression that ephedra should be completely banned? Jim - I looked at the URL - they give the appearance of authoritative data compilation however, the Rand Corporation's significant work for the FDA is not cited. This is important because Rand Corp found little real problem. My experience responding to these types of e-zine content is they are controlled by some interest that does not permit commentary via letters to the editor or formal academic response styles. I will look into it. As far as a public relations person writing and consulting with the organizations public. Board members do these things on a volunteer basis due to budget constraints. This is a next big item on our agenda. Your statement begs the following questions and I cannot resist the urge to ask them: Are you a member of a national organization? Would you like to serve on the board? And - are you attending the conferences? Membership and participation generate validity. Membership also creates a financial base for continued efforts on issues such as Federal Employee Benefits Packages or Medicare. Some will say Medicare doesn't pay and I don't want to play, but Medicare does fund much of the hospital residency programs. Do we want such possibilities for this profession? If so, then the symbols of cultural acceptance of our profession such as Medicare are essential from a metaperspective. Will Morris

I've let my membership lapse in the national organizations; little attracts my interest now at the conferences. As I've become more reclusive, my time is divided between teaching and practicing. The political struggles are for younger, more diplomatic, and less easily frustrated people; but as a citizen, I've still got my $.02 left. Guest guest
from ap. re: ephedra " The ban was based on extensive scientific study involving more than 16,000 reports of adverse health effects from products containing ephedra, officials said. " so " scientific " studies can based on reported effects. if the right people are wearing the white coats, i presume. the npr story informed it's listening public that ephedra has been used for 10 to 15 yrs. seems they've missed the mark by a few thousand yrs. more interesting, however, was the notion as reported by npr that the fda was using this ban to draw the industry into court, such that if the industy prevails the fda can have a high profile case with which to ask congress for more control. is metabolife going to throw the fda into the briarpatch? dean
Guest guest
From the aricle it appeared that this order was in regards to the company and not limited to any one state. The judge preceding over this was a federal judge. So when are we going to court to free up our herbs stuck in quarantine? Mike W. But there are conflicting reports out there. It would seem to me that this ruling is actually more far reaching than some reports are portraying it. However, the democrats are already up in arms and Henry Waxman and ted Kennedy are screaming for blood. Only Orrin Hatch and a rare democratic ally, Tom Harkin, stand between them and a media frenzy. I was diehard democrat until I realized slowly over the years how bad they were for our business. republicans are worse in every other way, so its just lose-lose. We could use a benevolent emperor perhaps.
