Greetings:

Has anyone had any successful experience treating Bi-Polar disorder using

acupuncture and herbs alone? This patient is adamantly opposed to even the

suggestion of western medication or psychotherapy..ie...in denial about his

condition and the need for treatment. Would using 'spirit points' be useful?

(The person has chronic untreated SP/LU def)

Dear Twyla,

There is a very nice section in Flaws and Lake's: " Chinese Medical Psychiatry "

on Bipolar Affective Disorder. I would highly recommend this textbook for

anyone treating shen disturbances.

Sincerely,

Yehuda

Twyla,

I have had extensive personal experience with bipolar disorder because a

family member has it. I want to caution you that it can be fatal, literally

fatal, if symptoms are not caught in time. While acupuncture can be incredibly

supportive and balancing for someone dealing with persistent mental illness,

things can deteriorate rapidly.

Often times, when someone is heading into, or in, a manic phase, they

can feel pretty good and will reject medications, therapy, etc. How will you

monitor this patient in between treatments? Are you comfortable being the only

health care practitioner caring for this patient? Are you well enough

acquainted with the cyclic mood swings of bipolar disorder to know the

difference between an improved state of being and a head towards the manic side?

Do you know how rapidly this patient tends to cycle?

I don't mean to sound overly dramatic. I have worked with several

patients with bipolar disorder and, in fact, just helped one woman through

pregnancy and some post-partum challenges. Sometimes, the changes they

experience with acupuncture allows for a decrease in medication (which must

always be done with supervision due to safety issues). Sometimes, they can't

decrease their meds, but getting acupuncture makes a major difference in the

quality of their life. However, I'm very leary of working with someone who

refuses any other help.

Hope this is of some help to you. And, I'd be interested in hearing

how things go if you do take on this patient.

Peace, Liz

There are not many books in English on CM psychiatry, but still I do think

that the book by Flaws and Lake lacks depth. I believe Alon Marcus made this

remark before: what we need is books written by experts as opposed to just a

collection of data. Like the books by Jiao Shu-de published by Paradigm Pubs

I'm reading Gunther Neeb's book on blood stasis now, and it's a delightful

read, if only for the case studies.

Best,

Tom.
