Yang deficiency of LV and HT: Should we ignore them as oddities?

Hi Par, All,

In THEORY, each organ has a Yang and Yin aspect. So, in THEORY, each

organ should have the possibility of having a Yang Xu and a Yin Xu.

In PRACTICE, because the concept of LV Yang Xu and LU Yang Xu are

rare in the literature (as assessed by WWW hits - see below), should we

ignore them completely?

If not, would those of you literate in Chinese care to summarise the Chinese

data for LV & LU Yang Xu for the List?

The relevant URLS are:

LV Yang Xu: " " : http://tinyurl.com/yry6fm (555 hits)

and

HT Yang Xu: " " : http://tinyurl.com/37ksfv (535 hits)

Google-searches suggest that the CONCEPT of liver-yang-xu and lung-

yang-xu are rare, relative to the CONCEPTS kidney-yang-xu, spleen-yang-

xu and heart-yang-xu.

The number of Google hits for the CONCEPT of Yang Xu for each of the 5

Zang organs are summarised below in decreasing citation order:

Hi Phil,

I think we have to be careful when we use the words yin and yang here. I

would argue that there is a physiological yin and yang, representing

substantial or qualitative aspects of the body according to CM and a more

broad set of taxonomical yin and yang aspects which could be applied to

organs, or flowers, or birds or mountains or whatever. Not that I think you

don't understand the difference, it's just that statement " every X yas a yin

and yang aspect " always sets off alarm bells for me.

This difference seems to lead to a lot of confusion in CM, which is not at

all clarified by the textual sources for our medicine using terms such as qi

and blood, yin and yang, ying and wei pretty much interchangeably, and very

rarely coming to consensus decisions about what is what.

The broad categories of diagnosis in pattern differentiation are reflective

of a less than exhaustive look at that physiological category of yin and

yang. I think one could say that theoretically lung yang xu and liver yang

xu are quite common, as they reflect a basic variation on the idea of weak

spleen yang/qi in most regards: liver in the lack of lifting function, and

lung in the lack of or poor circulation of wei qi, though there are

certainly other pathognomics which might differentiate them more

effectively.

That said, there are probably ways of framing diagnosis called lung or liver

yang xu that would make sense, and possibly yield novel treatments, or more

clinical clarity, so this could be a fun and rewarding exercise.

In my practice and experience, I definitely do not ignore these two

diagnoses are odditites. In fact, I see them quite regularly, despite the

lack of literature. Of course, diagnosing these things depends on one's

particular paradigm within the medicine. For me, a teacher of Contemporary

Chinese Pulse diagnosis in the Shen-Hammer system, these diagnoses are made

often via the pulse.

Liver yang deficiency is not the same as LV blood deficiency with cold

signs. Dr. Hammer discusses Liver yang deficiency at length in Dragon Rises

Red Bird Flies and in Chinese Pulse Diagnosis, A Contemporary Approach. It

can be of physical origin, constitutional or based on severe Liver disease

like hepatitis and other infections (mononuncleosis, epstein barr), drug use

(especially long-term marijuana), other drugs and toxins. It is becoming

increasingly common in this day from improper lifestyles, increased

pharmaceutical use, poor understanding of healthy living during pregnancy

and the effects of drug/medicine/chemical/toxin exposures to fetuses, etc.

Yang deficiency of the Heart is also diagnosed via the pulse and includes

such findings as significant Changing Intensity in the left distal position,

Changing Qualities in the left distal position, increase of Rate on Exertion

of less than 8 beats (the lower the more significant the deficiency), etc.

For more information on these diagnoses, I would refer those interested to

the above sources by Dr. Hammer. They are invaluable.
