Guest guest
Hi Kath, This is the Mehmet Oz. M.D. , " America's Doctor " as labeled by Oprah. He wrote a new book on " You the Smart Patient... " , I wrote a letter to the group, concerned about the image of acupuncture, because his new book makes acupuncturists look like 1800 hour technicians, instead of medical practitioners. (don't have the page #. It's in the back) in relation to chiropractors who graduate with over 4200 hours. When you click on Oprah's site, you see that a crew-cut, young Asian male administers the acupuncture with Mehmet Oz at his side. An interesting question is who could be the next... Dr. Phil, Andrew Weil, Deepak Chopra, Acupuncture personality? I hope that Mehmet doesn't become the voice and spokes-person for all of acupuncture. k. I have watched about five Oprah shows with him on. He is VERY effective in his ability to present medical ideas and concepts while engaging his audience, promoting more assertive self-care and analysis (his talk regarding bowel movements is one a lot of people remember). I have also seen him on Good Morning America more recently. Whatever the outcome or presentation of this show, it will be influential. I think the fact that Oprah is actually getting a treatment, rather than them simply talking about it, means that they are hoping to break a few barriers - Oprah can be a little squeamish, so if it's a good experience for her this could be quite persuasive. Am no expert on Dr. Oz, just a viewer.

Guest guest
The acupuncturist who will be on the show is a PCOM grad, who is now enrolled in the DAOM program. Apparently he treated one of Oprah's staff member's family, who had an amazing recovery. As for Dr. Oz, I personally think he is an excellent proponent to have in our court. There is often strong resistance from the NY medical community to embrace TCM as vaild. For me, this was a shock, having lived in SF for 10 years, where there is much more of a conversation. Melanie that sounds quite promising. let's hope it goes well, this could really raise the profile and credibility of acu. oprah seems to be the ultimate expert on everything these days, even better than your trusted hairstylist. _,___ -- Kath Bartlett, LAc, MS, BA UCLA Oriental Medicine Experienced, Dedicated, Effective Asheville Center For 70 Woodfin Place, Suite West Wing Two Asheville, NC 28801 828.258.2777 kbartlett www.AcupunctureAsheville.com

She's seen doctors, had X-rays and tried massage, but nothing has worked. She's now considering acupuncture, but wants Dr. Oz to weigh in. Just a few years ago, many Western doctors would have written off acupuncture and other " alternative " medicines. Now, Dr. Oz says acupuncture could make sense for Angela. " Here's the irony—acupuncture has been around for 2,500 years in China. There are a billion people in another part of the world who use these therapies. " Dr. Oz introduces her to acupuncturist Daniel Hsu, who takes Angela backstage for a full acupuncture treatment on her pained shoulder. Will it work? Keep reading to find out! While Angela's trying this ancient therapy, Dr. Oz explains the science behind acupuncture. Everyone knows that acupuncture involves sticking needles into your skin, but how might that cure what ails you? Dr. Oz says the needles stimulate endorphins and serotonin in your brain—natural chemicals that regulate pleasure and mood. " But let's broaden the discussion, because it's not just about acupuncture, " Dr. Oz says. " The reason I'm so excited and passionate about alternative medicine is … [because it is] the globalization of medicine. " [image: Dr. Oz says science has increasingly come to understand alternative medicines.] Alternative medicines, Dr. Oz says, deal with the body's energy—something that traditional Western medicine generally does not. " We're beginning now to understand things that we know in our hearts are true but we could never measure, " he says. " As we get better at understanding how little we know about the body, we begin to realize that the next big frontier … in medicine is energy medicine. It's not the mechanistic part of the joints moving. It's not the chemistry of our body. It's understanding for the first time how energy influences how we feel. " Oprah is ready to take a step toward the frontier of medicine…but she's a little scared of the whole *needle* part. Daniel was ready to ease her fears. " The needles that [Daniel] is going to use would actually fit through the hole in the needle that they use to take the blood from your arm, " Dr. Oz says. [image: Oprah gets her first acupuncture treatment.] " Acupuncture treats any condition from allergies to, obviously, pain to gastrointestinal issues—a wide range of chronic diseases, " Daniel says. Oprah doesn't suffer from those particular ailments, so Daniel recommends a wellness acupuncture treatment, which will help boost Oprah's immune system. This normally requires about 10 needles, he says, and the positive effects will be felt anywhere from 20 minutes to days afterwards. " It's really not bad, " Oprah says. " It's not as bad as getting your ears pierced, I'll tell you that. " The results are in! After a dozen needles were put in targeted places, Angela returns to the stage to report on how she feels. [image: Angela received acupuncture from Daniel Hsu.] " I'm on cloud nine, " she says. " I feel rejuvenated. The pain that I had was a constant radiating pain, and I don't feel it. Literally, I don't feel it. I feel wonderful. " Angela says she's ready for more acupuncture treatments, too. This is good because Daniel says she'll need a few more sessions to really cure her shoulder. " The key is to have a few treatments back-to-back-to-back so it builds up on itself, " he says. " Eventually she'll have no pain at all. Guest guest
Dr. Daniel did stumble a little when Oprah asked how long the treatment would last. I liked his answer, something like 3 or 4 days and the important thing was having back to back treatments. He also said eventually her pain would be gone. I have heard other acupunturists say this but I cannot utter these words. Everyone is different. How can you say it will be gone. We were just having this discussion on here not long ago, that the patient has to be invested in the healing. Also the patient might be invested, and things have gone on too long. So it will take more time to go away. Okay, it was still a positive outcome. Oprah said to the woman " Is you pain really gone, don't just say yes if it isn't. " And she affirmed that is was gone. Oprah also asked if she had the pain when she came in and she said yes definitely and that now it was completely gone. Again, a nailbiter. Dr. Oz explained acupuncture as setting off endorphins, but from the transcript (I didn't see the whole show), it seems he left out the electrical effects. As someone here said, it is good to have him presenting our profession in a positive light.
