Guest guest
I will recount my personal experience over the last 5 years since I think it is relevant to this issue. When I graduated, I really didn't feel I knew what I was doing. After about a year I had more confidence and the business picked up a bit. Then I was into my fear phase. I was worrying about money the whole time. I saw each patient as money. Then about year later I realized no one wants to come to a person who is afraid all the time and just seeing the patient as a way to pay bills. I shifted my energy to thinking how much I could help people and the business picked up dramatically. This fall I was deeply immersed in studying herbs and my business almost died. While I was on vacation I realized it was because I had a big do not disturb sign energetically. I came back and sent out, open for business, I can help you energy and the business is doing very well. In short, I think too many of us get caught in our own fear and it defeats us. I don't think that students should waste time on practice management. It really is not that hard. It is all common sense. The biggest challenge is how to notify the world that you are practicing. I have wasted a lot of money on advertising until I figured out what works for me. I have found less expensive internet listings work the best. A web page that gives prospecitve patients an idea of who you are as a person has worked very well for me. People call and they say they feel comfortable with me from the web page- www.attentivedragon.com. Also it helps if you can practice from your house because you not only save rent but you also can deduct a lot of expenses. It horrifies me to think people want JOBS. I worked a government job for 28 years and I really value the freedom and independence of being on my own. Not having other people set my hours, tell me what to do. The doctors I know who work for the HMO's are not that happy with their situation. Ending on a light note, I solved the sheet folding problem by putting the sheets on my treatment table instead of in the closet. I just take sheets off as I use them. Works fine.
