dividing up a formula in half

Dear friends, colleagues and teachers,

Now some good news. Some of you may know that my wife, Chana, has been sick

now for nearly 17 years with a neurological disorder manifesting with seizures

and a Parkinsonian movement disorder. While we were in London a couple of months

ago, we consulted with a Vietnamese practitioner who had a tradition of using

Chinese herbs quite differently from what I had been taught. Specifically, in

Chana's case, though he liked the herbs and dosages that I had been using for

her, he suggested dividing the 20 or so herbs in half:

using Qi supplementing, liver calming, phlegm transforming and wind

extinguishing medicinals AM, and Yin supplementing and spirit quieting

medicinals PM. Previously we had used one cup three times daily and now he was

suggesting 1/2 cup of each of the two formulas. The results have been

encouraging: the seizures have been less frequent and less intense with quicker

recovery, and she's definitely stronger and thinking more clearly.

Personally, I think that this approach makes alot of sense as the fellow in

London contends that there can be an absorption problem with large formulas

unless a patient has a particularly strong constitution. Furthermore, this

approach acknowledges that our bodies constantly change during different parts

of the day, and supplementing Qi AM and Yin PM would seem to better harmonize,

IMO.

I am anxious to hear yours,

Yehuda,

This seems like a logical approach to me, it is similar to an

approach I learned from Michael Broffman of using different

prescriptions at different times of day. Occasionally I do the

same. This Vietnamese practitioner's approach is impressive. I am

very happy that it was helpful for Chana, knowing you both as dear

friends for so many years. May she continue to heal at a steady pace.
