Cipangopaludina was the snail used in the Shehuang Paste (on navel in

refractory cirrhotic ascites):

 

Pinyin name: Tianluo (Snail flesh = Tianluorou)

 

Main actions: Clear Heat; Disinhibit Fluids (Free Damp); Treat Icterus

 

Dose: Usually 30g

We had a great teacher in school, Dr. Sunny Chu, who would take her

summer vacations in the countryside in China to talk to old docs and

gather folk remedies. We have a binder full of topical applications

for all kinds of crazy stuff. Pastes on the nipples for hot flashes,

plasters on the soles of the feet for colds, boiling a hunk of old

iron from a junk yard for broken bones.

 

Of course, I had dinner at her house once and for desert we had ice

cream.... sprinkled with crushed dried Vietnamese ants, which she had

flown in special. Huzzah! I don't think Cold Stone will be bringing

that mix-in anytime soon.
