I wrote briefly about this a couple of months ago, but now it is in effect, so: From yesterday January 1st, 2007 acupuncturists in Denmark do not have to be under the supervision of a M.D. anylonger! The Danish Department of Health has, through revision of law, issued a title: " Registreret Alternativ Behandler (RAB) " (or Registered Alternative Therapist) that can be given to following therapists: Acupuncturists, massagetherapists, reflexologists and kinesiologists. According to the new law only therapist engaged in: " Examination, diagnosis and treatment and/or prevention of illness " will be eligable for this title. Two important things here which are new and rather exciting are: 1) Acupuncturists through this law will be able lawfully to diagnose and treat any disease as long as Western medical care is not adviced against, and/or is properly referred to if needed. 2) The title can only be given to therapists engaged in medical services. Until now the above four types of therapists are the only ones to be eligable. So by yesterday acupuncture (and the other three forms of treatment) can be said to have been elevated to the status of " true " Medicine in Danish legislation!!!! Needles to say Most M.Ds, especially The Danish Medical Acupuncture Association did everything they could to prevent this development. However, they lost and the patients won Anyway I think that this an opening to going away from " Alternative Medicine " and moving towards " Complementary Medicine " (NOT towards " Integrative Medicine " ) and an opening for a better dialogue between the primary and secondary health care providers being of absolute benifit to any given the patient. Dialogue is always better than war!!!! The title is administered through respective guilds that has to live up to certain standards to attain approval from the Dept. og Health to give the new title to it's members. The basic standards are for education, patient insurance, continued education, ethics, proper insurance, etc. The respective approved guilds has freedom to demand even higher requirements than set forth by the Dept. of Health, which makes it a flexible arrangement with great potential for improvement in the acupuncture proffession in Denmark. The guild for acupuncturists in Denmark that has been chosen to administer the title to acupuncturist is called Praktiserende Akupunktører (PA)(Practicing Acupuncturists) and has been primus motor in this new highly welcomed development. This particular guild is TCM oriented meaning that any acupuncturist with the new title is at least fairly well educated in TCM. It is still legal to practice acupuncture without this title, but you will in any case need to be properly insured to practice legally - and virtually no insurance company will provide (affordable) insurance unless you are " Registered Alternative Therapist.
