Guest guest
Hi Pete and all, Almost ten years ago I was trying to be excited by a similar breakthrough (also in Canada)...but nothing dramatic has as yet come of it. These things proceed slowly (and often the " benefit " we derive from them are no more than stop-gaps). I apologise for my cynicism. Here are some updates and history ont he other diabetes breakthrough in Canada: http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/epcsums/isletsum.htm and http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,11069-2060150,00.html " Grafts of tissue from animals, however, pose ethical and safety concerns because they raise the prospect of introducing viruses and other pathogens that might prove harmful. Pigs carry viruses known as porcine endogenous retroviruses, which have written themselves into the animals’ genetic code. While these cause the pigs no harm, there are concerns that they could trigger diseases in humans. " and http://diabetes.diabetesjournals.org/cgi/content/full/54/4/1032 So I feel that we are still playing the waiting game. Have we, as a modern culture, actually experienced _any_ dramatic breakthroughs, " Cures " ? The closest that comes to mind would be infectious diseases, but now there are resurgences, so that is a qualified cure. But how about other stuff?
