Guest guest
Andrea: This is the Latin name, Vetiveria zizanioides and in Chinese is called Xiang Gen Cao " Sweet Root Grass " has been used in China since the 1950's, primarily in the SE provinces for erosion control. Perhaps you may be able to find the herb in this way. Guest guest
golden needle carries some ayurvedic products. unsure whether they have the one you seek, but its a possibility you might look into. i've seen it as an essential oil in healthfood stores: an interim possibility until you locate it in capsule form. please follow up with treatment results if it works. thx and hope this is helpful, kath On 12/6/06, < wrote: > > Hi All- > > My patient with 5 years of continuous headaches has had 2 different > doctors recommend she take vetiver capsules, 50 mg 3x daily. Guest guest
Andrea, In the " Essential Oil Desk Reference " sec ed they speak of it as for calming and stress relieving. They are also analyzing the oil (and constituents) that are produced/sold by Young Living, an essential oil MLM. You might also try this site http://www.floracopeia.com/ for various traditional Indian products. Mike W. Guest guest
Hi Jack, Thank you! I'm sure the Chinese name will be most helpful. I already had the Latin name. Guest guest
I should have mentioned that you simply have patient put oil into capsules just before administration. Mike W. Guest guest
Hi Andrea, Just a hunch, but maybe your patient was told to take butterbur instead of vetiver. My rationale is based on a few reasons: 1. Their names have similar pronunciations. 2. Butterbur has been studied and used for migraine headaches, usual dose being 50 mg. tid. 3. Vetiver is not very common herb to us western folk and its uses don't seem to be that popular for chronic headaches. If not many people knew of it on this group, I wouldn't bet on western MD's being familiar with it or recommending it. Maybe not, but whatcha think? Here are some links for butterbur: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/496706 http://www.migraineaid.com/ http://www.rainbowlight.com/product.aspx?id=GR7739 & mid=776 Danny Johnson L.Ac. www.santacruzacupuncture.com On Dec 6, 2006, at 4:37 PM, wrote: > Hi All- > > My patient with 5 years of continuous headaches has had 2 > different doctors recommend she take vetiver capsules, 50 mg 3x > daily. Guest guest
Are you sure it's Vetiver? I have never heard this herb used for anything but as an e-oil, but even then is more used in perfumery than as a medicinal. There is the herb Butterbur, which does in fact work very well with headaches (even for migraines), i'm certain there is quite a bit of info on the web about this one (in Energetics of Western Herbs by Peter Holmes as well). Guest guest
Ah, good clarification. How much oil would compare to a 50 gm capsule of powdered herb? Guest guest
Hi Danny, It seems unlikely my patient would receive the same incorrect name for an herbal recommendation from two different doctors. How they know about it, I don't know. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they're in Sedona :-). I can have her check with them on the name again, but I don't think this is mere mistaken coincidence. Guest guest
just to throw in my 2 cents- jeffrey yuen's essential oil materia medica has vetiver essential oil listed as being good for tension headache, it is very grounding(they use the root for the oil); it is also useful for liver qi stagnation manifesting in the sinews... --- < wrote: > Hi Danny, > > It seems unlikely my patient would receive the > same incorrect name for an herbal recommendation > from two different doctors. Guest guest
Yes, I am sure this is what the two docs told my patient. A little online search revealed that it is, indeed, used for headaches, but didn't clarify whether it's used in essential oil form or powdered for internal use. Apparently it's widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. miracles28 <jellyphish wrote: Are you sure it's Vetiver?
