Guest guest
Hi Everybody, A friend of mine wanted some advice about a nursing mother who had been taking Cipro/Amoxicillin for 1 month for a sinus infection. During this time period she had been nursing her 3 month old infant. Does the antibotics cross into the milk? If it does, what can the mother safely give to the infant take to restore his intestinal flora. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you, Ky Yu
Guest guest
Yes the antibiotic will be in her milk...the baby should be on a live yogurt to restore the proper GI tract biotics...you see alot of thrush in babies whose mothers are on antibiotics. I would also suggest ellagic acid. Dr. Susan Thorpe-Vargas (immunology)
Guest guest
Dear Ky, Both cipro and ampicillin group antibiotics are secreted in milk. So, we must be cautious when administering them to nursing women. Also, it depends on severity of mother disease. In non-severe conditions it must not be administered. some antibiotic-like herbals may be used. Guest guest
Hello, live yoghurt is a step in the right direction but its nowhere near a big enough step. One needs an infant acidopholis formula (Biocare in uk is my recommendation). stephen > Yes the antibiotic will be in her milk...the baby should be on a live yogurt > > to restore the proper GI tract biotics...you see alot of thrush in babies > whose mothers are on antibiotics. Guest guest
Dear KyYu Many antibiotics pass from mother milk , many of them are contraindicated like ciprofloxacin because of adverse effects on growing bone , based on animal studies. When an antibiotic causes changing of infant intestinal flora , the infant become irritable with mild diarrhea often green & mucus flecks .. He / she would have abdominal pain & sometimes mild nausea. Yogurt have lactobacillus & is very effective if given to mother or infants older than 6 months. Late onset problems due to changing intestinal flora is very unlikely & she shouldn`t fear .I think it is better to forgot this history & give the mother instructions to prevent recurrent sinus infection to avoid another course of antibiotic treatment. Acupuncture & Herbal remedies are effective. Thanks B. Guest guest
Here is a link to a bmj info article on antibiotics and breastfeeding: http://pmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/reprint/80/942/196.pdf In Australia there is a product called " life start " that can be given to neonates and infants. (recommended for instance if the mother had to take IV AB's for group B strep during labour.) Its just a probiotic powder available from chemists. There are many other types of probiotic products to restore intestinal flora, but just check with manufacturers for ones suitable for babies. I think that bifidus infantum is more important for babies than lactobacillus. Metagenics makes one for babies. Otherwise, once the mother has stopped taking the AB's, she could always take the probiotics, assuming she is going to continue to breastfeed. Speak to a qyalified pharmacist. For older babies, some toddler formulae like to advertise that they add probiotics, but the ones available in Australia have lots of added glucose or sucrose, which is a bit stupid IMO. If the baby develops oral thrush, then in my experience probiotics are necessary, but to really clear it up quickly, go with the antifungal gels available from a chemist. (Others who dont like allopathic meds can disagree, but Ive found them useful to clear the infection quickly so that upset babies and toddlers will start eating again, which makes everyone happier.)
