Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I has anyone heard of St John's wart being contraindicated for someone on SSRIs. Ive just started treating a patient who suffers with depression and have been reading in Robert Rister's book on Japanese Herbal Medicine that SSRI's are contraindicated with certain herbs including St Johns wart. I treat the patient with acupuncture but have recently studied kanpo and was thinking of prescribing min Cinnamon and Peony or Major 4 as they fit his abdominal pattern and overal deficiency appearance. Any advice appreciated. Tony UK ---------- Version: 7.1.408 / Virus Database: 268.13.4/476 - Release 14/10/2006
Guest guest
Dear Tony, Warnings were sent out about this herb a few years ago since it was discovered that it can help liver function and as a result 'burn up' drugs in the body quicker. It was therefore not recommended that anyone on a long, long list of drugs take it. As a Western herbalist I have used it for years without noticing any adverse effect. If you are not sure about the combination with the drug then I would advise to leave well alone, due to the above history. At least you'll be able to sleep at night! Usually if I was using it for lowered mood I would always use a combination of many other herbs anyway, it is easy to find ways round it.
