Does anyone have experience treating ulcers that form on the cornea? The patient

will only

be able to take herbs, no acupuncutre right now.

She wears contacts for the last 18 years and has recently had 2 ulcers on her

cornea. Dr. said

it was due to low oxygenation but new contacts that allow more O2 don't help. I

think it is

damp heat in LV/GB with some yin xu but I haven't been able to full asses her.

I am thinking of Ming Mu or Qi Ju di Huang wan for long term and Long Dan Xie

Gan Wan for

acute symptoms but does anyone know of anything better or even a topical

compress? Any

input would be much appreciated! Thanks- Jennifer

In February had this to say on the CHA group; he was

initially talking about treating sinusitis:

" A good alternative is coptis extract (copticlear) from Kan Herb

company. It is a water/alcohol extract, you just need a few drops in

warm water, then it can be used as a nasal douche, eye wash, or in

the ears. I have great success with it. Sometimes I combine it with

Kan's chrysanthemum extract for the eyes. "

You could use an eyewash cup with the above solution. I think you can pick

them up at most pharmacies.

Jen & Sean,

An approach that I have used for eye problems is a variation on Z'ev's

suggestion: Make a concentrated decoction of Huang Lian, and boil it down to

just an ounce. Then steep a regular tea bag in the decoction for a minute. Let

cool, squeeze out the excess liquid (still moist though) and place the bag on

the eye orbit for 15 minutes. The tannin in the tea has antibiotic, antiviral

and antifungal properties and works synergistically with the Huang Lian to treat

damp heat, if that is the pattern. BTW, the HL stains so make sure you don't let

it drip.

One other thing, In Chen & Chen's MM, a clinical study is listed with 121 out

of 129 patients successfully treated for corneal ulcers (98 complete recovery,

22 moderate improvement). The formula decocted and used as a wash for topical

application (soak a towel and apply) was: mi meng hua 15, Huang lian 15, zi cao

gen15, mu zei 20, gu jing cao 20 and qin pi 20.

Good luck,

Hi Jeannifer,

When I was an intern, we had a patient in clinic with

a damp heat cyst in the drainage duct between his

inner canthus and nose. Not the same condition, but

we had him use compresses of ju hua at home and it

really helped. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Take care to evaluate whether the condition really is

damp heat, or if it might be dryness.

Thanks Andrea. I will take that into consideration. B/c it is a long term

problem, I am sure

there are elements of dryness involved as well. I will start with the compress

and go from

there. Much appreciated-
