Hi All,

What procedures are used in " " Three ways " method of acupuncture " in

acute ischemic cerebrovascular diseases [acute cerebral infarction]?

See:

Ji J, Liu HL, Cheng JL. Zhongguo Zhong Xi Yi Jie He Za Zhi. 2006

Jun;26(6):500-3. Links [Effects of " three ways " method of acupuncture

on serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1beta

patients with acute ischemic cerebrovascular diseases][Article in

Chinese] Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Beijing Hospital

of TCM Affiliated to Capital University of Medical Sciences.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of " Three ways " method of

acupuncture on serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-

alpha) and interleukin1beta (IL-1beta) in patients with acute ischemic

cerebrovascular diseases (ICVD). METHODS: 60 patients with acute

cerebral infarction were randomly divided into the treated group treated

by " Three ways " method of acupuncture and the control group by hand

and foot acupuncture on acupoints of the hands and feet. Serum levels

of TNF-alpha and IL-1beta were detected with radioimmunoassay

before treatment and at the 6th, 12th and 28th days of treatment.

Neurological deficit score (NDS) and Barthel Index (BI) were also

observed in the same time. RESULTS: After treatment, serum levels of

TNF-alpha and IL-1beta in both groups decreased significantly (P <

0.05), approaching the normal range at the 28th day of treatment, which

were even lower in the treated group than those in the control group,

and the decreasing trend were significantly different (P < 0.05).

Compared with the control group, the effect in decreasing NDS and

increasing BI in the treated group was better than that in the control

group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: " Three ways " method of acupuncture

could reduce serum levels of TNF-alpha and IL-1beta, alleviate injury of

nervous function so as to improve the daily life ability, superior to hand

and foot acupuncture. PMID: 16841663 [PubMed - in process]

Phil and others,

the " three ways " acupuncture method used in the study below is as follows :

- first week: strong clearing method: use three edge needle to prick to

bleed baihui GV20, sishencong, chize LU5 and weizhong BL40 (two last points

only on affected side). You can let the points bleed until the blood turns

from a dark purple colour to fresh red, then stop the bleeding with a cotton

ball.

- weeks 2-4: use slight clearing method: even method on baihui GV20,

sishencong, and on affected side quchiLi11, hegu LI4, taichong LIV3, zusanli

ST36, sanyinjiao SP6.

- in the control group: weeks 1-4: even method on bilateral quchi Li11,

neiguan PC6, hegu LI4, zusanli ST36, yanglingquan GB34, sanyinjiao SP6.

I don't really know why the method was translated as " three ways " . Chinese

writing is san1 tong1, tong as in through. I think a better translation

would be three clearing method, although I'm not sure. Don't know where the

three comes from. There is an expression in Chinese san1tong1 by which one

refers to three classical works (unrelated to the medical field) but again I

don't know if this is why they chose the name. There is a reference in the

text to the work of a professor He Puren. I will check out the reference

later.

Note: during my internship in Nanjing in the in-patient dept, mostly zhong

feng patients were treated. The above method was more or less standard on

newlyy admitted patients. Some other points were frequently used, namely the

extra points jinjin yuye on either side of the frenulum under the tongue.

These points were also pricked to bleed, and they let them bleed for quite

some time. They used a basin to collect the blood. Jing points were also

pricked to bleed in some patients.

Regards,

Tom.

Today I found the article that was mentioned in yesterday's post.

San1 tong1 fa3, or " three freeing/ clearing methods " is a term coined by

Professor He Pu-ren. Pricking to bleed with a three-edged needle is one of

those " obstruction removing methods " . See the abstract below:

Wang GL,He PR.Professor He Puren’s clinical experience.

Chin Acupunct Moxib 2003;23(9):545-547.

Abstract: the paper introduces some of professor He Puren's experiences in

the treatment of some difficult and complicated diseases with 3 obstruction

removing methods: 1. According to different individual conditions and

symptoms, filiform needle, three edge needle, fire needle and moxibustion

are flexibly applied to treat vitiligo. 2. Fire needle pricking local area

combined with AP at chengjiang (CV24), yemen (TE2) and Zhaohai (KI6) are

used for treatment of sore throat. 3. fire needle pricking tortuous vein

combined with AP on xuehai (SP10) are used for treatment of varicosity.

Tom.
