This is among the strangest things I have ever seen. Our

caregiver/housekeeper who is from Singapore and is ethnic Chinese

shared with us a remedy to get rid of flies that, as she says, " is an

old Chinese tradition " . If I hadn't seen it for myself, I would never

have believed it. Here goes: In rooms where flies seem to swarm,

take a plastic bag, fill it about half way with water, and hang it on

something so that it hangs down conspicuously. I don't know how or

why it works, but our home is virtually fly free. Very bizarre

indeed! What did they do before the plastics revolution 30 or so years

ago? I dunno.

Try it yourself, and wishing you a flyfree summer (or winter for those

of you down under).

Yehuda,

Thank you for solving a mystery for me! I went to a local popular Mexican

restaurant here in northern Arizona, and there were baggies half full of water

attached to each of the large windows. Nobody on staff that night knew what

they

were for, and the customers were having a good time making up reasons for the

" water balloons " on the windows. Now the only remaining mystery is how they

attached those baggies to the windows!

My impression is that it does not. I am still aware

of them buzzing around.

Thank you, H. Peter, Fascinating! However, I think

that there is more to it than that, as the bags we are

using are translucent, and the water can't be seen by

them. One other thought, just came to me, BTW: I

seem to recall that many years ago, during the

Cultural Revolution (may its memory be erased!) that

one of Mao's crazy campaigns was a concerted effort to

have the people kill out all the flies in China. Does

anyone else remember that?

A related practice, found, e.g. in State Parks in California, is used

to reduce the population of yellow jackets (a form of wasp which is

black and yellow striped like a bee, and is carnivorous, so hangs

around picknic tables) -- cut the top off a plastic bottle, say a 1

liter softdrink or water bottle, cut just below where the maximum

width begins; invert the top and set it into the top of the bottom

half, creating a funnel into the bottle. Pour some sweetish liquid

like a cola into the bottle. The bugs get lured in by the aroma of

the sweet treat, but can't find their way out, and drown, perhaps

gloriously, in the sugary liquid.

Thanks, Chris.

Anybody have any ideas or remedies for getting rid of

mosquitoes, (besides burning a citronella candle)?

Hi Chris!

I have found an electronic flyswatter to be outstanding. All you have to

do is touch the skeeter with it and he/she is fried.

Regards,

Pete
