According to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, as toenails grow slowly (about 1cm each year) they can show an individual's long-term total exposure to tobacco smoke. Findings also revealed that the test can determine exposure to passive smoking and the amount of smoke a person inhales with each puff. The study suggested that women with the highest nicotine levels in their toenails are four times more prone to heart disease. University of California scientists say that available tests for assessing the nicotine level in the body such as saliva or urine tests can only report recent exposure to cigarette smoke.
