Guest guest
Most of you know that my son Ty is autistic. He will be five years old next month and his autism is definitely a personality definer. He shuns social interaction, his eye contact is not the best, he likes to throw things and he doesn't use his silverware just to name a few things. In March Ty was selected to do a four month trial of the effects of Limu juice. Some of you I'm sure have heard of this. For those of you who haven't it a juice made from seaweed from Tonga. It's active ingredient is fucodian. This has been around for awhile. In fact my mother wanted to try it a couple of years ago and I discouraged her from doing so because it seemed like a scheme to me. It costs about $32.00 a bottle and is supposed to help everything under the sun. I was still skeptical when Ty started drinking it but after two weeks the change was amazing. His social interaction is so much better than it was. He actually seeks us out to play with us. He makes eye contact now at least 90% of the time. He still throws things but not like he used to and has even used his silverware a time or two. He's even tried chop sticks. He has started mocking the things we do. Case in point, Gabriel and I play a game when we're in the truck. We pretend going uphill that we're on a roller coaster and we make appopriate noises. When we crest the hill I'll say ready Gabriel and we throw up our arms and scream while we're going down. Several weeks ago when I said ready Gabriel, Ty threw his arms up and screamed. That particular time I'd not done the climbing noise. But the best thing that has resulted from all of this is that for the first time ever Ty said Mama today. That's a thing most parents take for granted. Myself included. I've told my older children that I changed my name for the day when they'd called me a million times. But to look at my beautiful son who I have no idea if he'll ever talk on a regular basis and hear my name come out of his mouth was indescribable. I can only pray it's not the last time. Autism, ADD and ADHD Barbara Saker for Emory Saker, Pittsburg, KS I have always believed that God made our bodies to heal themselves. That pharmaceutical¢s are foreign to the body and only cover symptoms. The hope was that the body would heal itself if the body did not have to deal with the symptoms. This has proven to be a false belief. Therefore I have always searched for the alternative to drugs. Our son Emory has severe autism. Autism, in Emory¢s case, means that the digestive system does not function well. It also means that Emory is non-verbal and needs 24 hours supervision. He is now 26 years old. Emory needs an inordinate amount of food in order to attain any level of health. I had not allowed Emory to take any drugs for the 11 ½ years I had him at home. But at 11 ½ I had to put him in a state facility. I attained legal guardianship when he was 18 so that I could control the decisions that were being made concerning his life. Puberty is the hardest time for those who live with autism. When Emory was 13 he began to bite himself through the skin. He also would slam his jawbone into his collarbone until his jaw bone was bruised. You could actually hear the bone hit bone. I did not want him to hurt himself or anyone else. The only answer anyone seemed to have was drugs. I knew when I relinquished my vow not to drug him that Emory and I were in for a long journey. I had read that the drugs do not affect those with autism like they do other people. They work very short term and then begin doing exactly the opposite of what they are meant to do. The doctors that Emory had evidently had not read that bit if information. So instead of dropping a drug that appeared to be having a negative effect on him, they only added more drugs thinking that the behaviors were a sign of side effects. This was being done by two doctors, a psychiatrist and an M.D., at the same time. Neither doctor was speaking to the other and neither doctor was contacting me. I attend a meeting once a month with a team of three other people. We go over all of the documentation by the staff from the previous month and make decisions about what needs to be done or what needs to be changed. It was at these meeting that I would find out what new drugs had been prescribed. By the time Emory was 20 he was on Tegretol, Buspar, Haladol & Xanax. He was a drug addict that was barely able to function. I told this team that I wanted to take Emory off of all the drugs. Of course I was told that I could only do that by a doctors order. None of the doctors that Emory was seeing would take him off of the drugs. They were convinced that he needed to be on all of those drugs. Finally via the internet I found a doctor that belonged to D.A.N. (Defeat Autism Now). He told me that drugs do not help the autistic. I had found an answer to prayer. We began the quest of taking Emory off of all drugs. No one that worked in that field believed that Emory would be able to get along in this world without some drugs. Some were willing to see just what Emory was like without all of the drugs. Still they believed that he would need be put back on some drug in order to function in a way that was not damaging to him or others. It took five years to get Emory drug free. We even had to put him on drugs to get him off of Xanax. Emory is a mentally challenged non- verbal individual. We could not put him in a rehab center. Emory had to come off of the drugs with very little help. It was a hell I will never allow him to encounter again. By the time he was down to the last drug, which was the drug we had to administer to bring him down from Xanax, he was not sleeping but two or three nights a week. He very seldom slept all night. He was not eating well. This five foot six inch man weighed 112 pounds. He looked hollow eyed & toxic. The constipation was terrible. We had been fighting this for ten years for all of the drugs slowed the colon down. About the time we began doctoring with the D.A.N. doctor, we found a new MD. We told this doctor about the constipation and that it would be as much as 10 days before Emory would have a bowel movement. Then it was hard as a rock, black as coal, and about the size of a softball. She immediately ordered an x-ray. The x-ray showed that Emory¢s colon was stretched to the max. It could not have taken any more stool without bursting. It took us three months to get the colon back to its normal size. Then there was a script written that stated that if Emory did not have a bowel movement every day an enema was to be administered on the morning of the third day. In June of 2003 Emory had 20 enema¢s. Emory displayed all of the toxicity that goes with chronic constipation problems. I new that what health he had left was now in jeopardy if we did not find an answer to this chronic constipation problem. We needed something to stimulate the colon so that it would begin working on its own again. We were trying everything. I even found a doctor who had enzyme¢s he just knew would be the answer to Emory¢s problem. We gave them a try and did exactly what the doctor told us to do. When they failed this doctor suggested that Emory¢s colon be scoped for he believed something was wrong in the colon. We set that appointment up and got down to the night before the scope. Emory had to drink this liquid that was designed to clean out the colon. Emory drank it all. The next morning when he went in for the scope his colon was not empty. He was sent home with instructions that he was to have a liquid diet and then drink the liquid again that night. This was done and when Emory went back the next morning his colon still was not empty. The doctor said that he would not need to do the scope for Emory¢s problem was he was impacted. Now that they had cleaned out the colon Emory would be all right. I made the mistake of not going to this appointment so the staff took the doctors word and they left. Of course it was not the answer to Emory¢ s problem. All through this time Emory was also having terrible anxiety attacks. On occasion he would throw television sets, microwaves, and can goods. He would get up in the night and completely trash his room. This is the anger most addicts encounter in rehab. Emory did not know how to deal with this anger. No one knew how to help him deal with the anger. And yet everyone could see an amazing difference in this man. He was so much more aware of what was happening around him and able to complete a task without verbal prompts. It was Emory¢s personality that was being observed. An awakening. I needed something to help Emory through his recovery and bring about wellness. In June of 2003 I was introduced to Limu by a Mother of a son with autism. Our paths had crossed before at seminars and workshops about autism. I knew her when I saw her and I had witnessed the level of severity with her son. Although her son was about 10 years younger than Emory, the severity of the autism was the same. At the time I was introduced to Limu her son had been taking it for two years. I was astounded by the results and that Limu had not stopped working like all of the other natural products I had tried. So I began the task of getting the doctor to write a script for Emory to take Limu. Of course he had to do some investigating but in the end he believed it was worth a try. Within the first 30 days Emory was sleeping all night every night. His appetite was back and he was eating again. Within the next 30 days his colon began to function better. His mood swings stopped. His anxiety attacks were almost nil. We are now into our ninth month and Emory just keeps getting better. He does not have anxiety attacks any longer. He does not throw fits of rage. He is learning more and more tasks. He is affectionate for the first time in his life and actually gives people hugs. He never ever did this before because he is so sensory. This means that all of Emory¢s senses are hyped. So for instance touch is very nurturing. To most of us we long for a touch. To Emory it was like a shock. He would actually flinch when touched. Now he initiate¢s touch. And the most amazing thing to me at this point is his ability to be gentle. He was always so spastic before. Even when he was little, he was not able to be gentle. As time went on it got worse. Sometimes when Emory wanted to touch you he would smack you. And he would often smack you hard. Now he is able to actually caress my hand. It is simply amazing. A couple of months ago we took Emory out to eat. We like to go to a buffet because of the amount of food Emory eats. The restaurant never comes out ahead when Emory eats there. Anyway, I had never in his life been able to take Emory around the buffet and let him choose what he wanted. I decided to give it a try that morning because of all the good reports I had about how he behaved in public. And we did great! It is hard to find the words that adequately express what that meant to me. Such a small accomplishment to most. A giant step forward for Emory. Everyone who worked with Emory, everyone in the field that has ever encountered Emory is amazed. Emory has proven that a person with autism does not need drugs in order to function in this world. I wonder how many more people could do without drugs if they took Limu? I strongly urge anyone who is dealing with autism or ADD or ADH to give Limu a real good try. What I would have given to have had Limu when Emory was young. It is the only product that I have ever found that could bring a quality of life to Emory that every Mother would die to attain. It will not hurt any human being in any way and it has the potential to bring health to everyone. We Limu every day. I take the message to everyone I know. Limu is Gods answer to prayer for His children. If God wants us to be healthy then He provides the means to health. He created this world. He created the seaweed. He knew we would deplete the soil. God knew we would become a society that could not let the food ripen on the vine. God knew we would need Limu. It is Gods way of blessing us!
