Guest guest
One of the things I have been trying to do is find local native plants or plants I can grow to use for healing. I have also been working with the idea of food I consume as healing agents---such as cinnamon or stevia for diabetes. If anyone has information along those lines I would appreciate it. I live in New York State. Howbeit, it is hard to find a lot of the "cures" you are talking about as the items you speak of are in speciality stores and if you don't live in a major metropolitan area -- well you may be out of luck?! Especially if we don't use the internet to order something, because we like to touch a jar before we buy -- thea

They're not full-size - sort of the size one could stick in one's back pocket. Your local bookstore should have them. I also got some books with pictures of plants that are used medicinally - sometimes you can find one written by a local author. If not, between the two books, you should 1st.) be able to identify what plants you have in your area. and 2nd) the book that talks about healing and medicinal plants should tell you how to use them - or, rather, how they're commonly used. Sometimes you have to be careful, because sometimes something that may be poisoness looks a lot like something that is good......which is one of the reasons I liked the books with the pictures. I also got a book like for bugs and snakes and the like, so I'd know what I was dealing with..... I used to go out hunting things with my kids. Also, depending on where you live, there may be a " local " section in bookstores. If there is, you may be able to find something specific, written by a local. The climate can be really varied in NY state. Where? Upstate? My mother was from Utica. You probably can find some stuff online as well, that pertains to your specific area. People on this group may be able to give you more specific details - esp with the foods and spices question. But, if it's not to your satisfaction (I always like having something I can thumb through), there are lots of books regarding uses of foods for health and/or healing. Some of the best, I've found, are one that were compilations of things relayed to them by old-time country folk. I wish I could give you some specific names, but mine are all in storage....I have a number of them. Sometimes, if you have used bookstores in your area, or even thrift shops, you can pick up some of the most amazing things. Wish I could have helped - but just wanted to share how I found things like that. Don't know if you have your own place, but there's one more book that is very cool. It's called " Edible Landscaping. " Title self explanatory, but if you have the place, you'd be amazed at not only what you can grow, but how attractive it can be as well.
