Isn't a church just a "place" of worship, be it a tent or a castle does it really matter?

What is all the money used for any way?

Didn't Christ tell his followers to give up everything and follow him?

Funny though, I remember for a time (and yes I was a Deacon at one time) I did the tithing thing. I still had enough left over for all the necessities of life, I just went without all the comforts.

Don't want to get into a theological debate, though.Although we knew of the Christian tenent of tithing (giving 10% of what you get or earn to the church), we'd never tried it, because we felt we didn't enough money as it was. But, when the minister at the church we were going to said people ought to try it, and if they didn't feel they had gotten back at least what we had tithed after a couple of months, he'd give it back, we decided it was a win-win situation. Anyway, that was during the time that all 7 kids were there. So, we began tithing. And, the most amazing thing happened - even though we couldn't figure it out by doing the numbers, because the numbers just didn't seem to add up, we wound up having more money, and were able to buy more food, clothes, wood for the wood stove - whatever it was we needed. My ex was really good with numbers, had a Master's in Business, and had a firm grip financially on what we did, so it wasn't an issue of not knowing what was spent for what. And, it wasn't that people gave us things for free, or even reduced prices. What we counted was what went in versus what went out, and what that paid for and purchased. Somehow, we got more food for the same money. A number if things worked that way. Some people get financial windfalls when they tithe. It's a difficult thing to explain, sort of like what is below, except that we didn't go by the moon or any astrological signs. And, it's totally not logical.Lynn

Yep - a church is usually defined as a place - wherever or whatever it

might be - one congregates to worship....I think what is meant, is where

But, certainly, one can be anywhere and worship. Personally, I've always

loved services in the outdoors - just not always practical depending on

always need a service - sometimes, being in certain places, I get

And, yes, Christ did. But, you know that....*smile* Basically, that's

I just checked the meaning of church in Webster's and there is several descriptions

that mainly boil down to two. A church, being the building the congregation meets in

and church being the congregation as a whole. in other words, the Church of Christ.

The whole membership, regardless of how many different church buildings scattered

around the country, make up the church.

I remember I use to go to the Seventh Day Adventist Church and when I stopped going

to their services they came around quite often trying to get me to start back up. After a

year or so they quit trying and came over and wanted me to dis-associate myself from

them on paper. I told them no way. I told them I believed there are absolutely true saints

that talk the talk and walk the walk 24-7 in every Christian Church even tho a good share

of the members are part time Christians. I said no way would I dis-associate myself from

true Saints of God. Like I said, I believe there are true saints in every denomination and

if they have been taught wrong, the penalty will fall on the teachers and preachers. I don't

believe the part timers are true believers. I believe it is those true saints that make up the

Church. That's my opinion only and you each have a right to your own opinions.

7th Day Adventists aren't exactly considered mainstream Christians. They

have a number of beliefs that run contrary to what most Christians

believe. As do the Momons.........can't lump them all into the bag you

want to call Christianity. It's easy enough to look them up if you want

to know the difference.

As far a what church means - in the context of what we were talking

about, which was tithing, a building or place would be the correct

definition.

A number of words have several meanings, however when trying to find the

meaning of that word, one must also consider the context in which it was

used.
