Could someone enlighten me on dairy prouducts. I hear lots of good and

bad and would like some opinions. Have anyone seen major differences

in their health from avoiding dairy? If so what causes this to happen?

We drink a lot of milk around here and I have always wondered if it

was really good for us considering it comes from another mammel and we

are the only mammals that drink another one milk.

We used a lot of dairy for many years. During the time we used dairy

we had frequent colds, strept throat, tonsilitis, etc. Six years ago,

after much research, we went off of all dairy, eggs, and meats, plus

started using whole grains in everything. We have found that we

hardly ever get any kind of illness anymore. The reason is anything

that causes mucus in the body is providing feeding grounds for

pathogens. Dairy is one of the top mucus forming foods. Good

substitutes for dairy are soy milk, almond milk, rice milk. These can

be used one for one as a direct substitution in recipes calling for

milk. (Rice milk is much thinner than regular milk so you may not

like the texture in some foods.)

Oh yea, big difference for me! Three months ago I changed my eating

habits. I cut out many things - dairy, sugar, white flour, procesed

foods, food additives, meat and poultry, caffeine, corn, I think

that's it....LOL

I was feeling horrible before this change, always tired, felt foggy

all the time, no energy, couldn't concentrate, had aches and pains. I

felt really old and I'm 36. I started eating a lot of fish, veggies,

fruits, whole grains and beans. I was buying organic juices but just

bought a juicer so now I do it myself and it is wonderful. I feel so

good now. I will NEVER go back to eating the way I was - never. After

I cut out dairy I added it back after 2 weeks and found that dairy

and I don't get along! I became bloated and feeling yucky again. I

cut it out again and everything is fine! I believe many of us suffer

from food allergies that we are unaware of because we don't have

immediate symptoms like some people do with food allergies. You might

*try* eliminating it for say a week and note any changes in your

overall well being and then reintroduce it and see what happens. It

can take hours or even days sometimes to have a reaction for some

people. Another thing you can do to test for food allergies is an

early morning pulse test. Upon waking DO NOT get up out of bed, just

lie there. You'll need someone to bring you some cheese or milk so

you can stay there in bed. Take your pulse before testing and note

the number. Now, place the cheese under your tongue, or the milk, and

hold it there a minute and then spit it out. Wait 20 minutes and

recheck your pulse. If it went up more than a beat or two there's an

allergy.

I gave up dairy about 15 years ago. I stopped getting head colds which I had constantly from childhood. I actually found out what it is like breathing through my nose! A few years ago I started using it again around the holidays and was sick for over a month. I've heard it creates mucus through out the body, and I'm a believer in that. I believe our body does not need the extra calcium from cow's milk - it was made for growing small calves into large cows in a few years. Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts & seeds and our bodies get all the calcium they need. I also believe that all the hormones, antibiotics, etc that are in cows milk our bodies will be better without. Our child is 5 and is growing great without it - had cow ice cream once which resulted in a terrible ear ache, now we like Soy Delicious or make our own using frozen

bananas. His cousins range from 6 - 19, have growth problems and do not use dairy either. Moooove Over Milk, by Vicki B. Griffin would be a great book for you to research information. Hi Tabby -

 

Personally, I have experienced many benefits from avoiding the regular

consumption of milk. I used to have chronic headhachs, which went away

went I quit eating so much dairy. Also, my eyes are much clearer. I

used to have tiny, yellowish deposits on the inside corner of my eyes,

which a medical doctor had laughingly dismissed as " fatty deposits "

although I was very slender and in my early twenties ... after

stopping frequent dairy consumption these disappeared (in my 40s). I

generally feel healthier.

 

If I do consume dairy now it is when it is included in a meal that I

eating out or at someone's house and this seems to pose little problem

since I consume so little. If I use cheese, it is only imported,

organic, and unpastureized (takes some effort to find, but fortunately

I have a farmer's market near by). There are many other reason, but

we've been heavily marketed to that dairy will help our children grow

strong, but there are better sources of calcium.

 

Don't take my word on it ... here is a link, with references that talk

about dairy. I'm not a r to the site, but it was a link that

I had saved because they bothered to do foot notes as their claims

about a vegetarian diet and the " what's wrong with dairy. "

Hi Tabby,

 

Opinions are strong on this topic... here's mine.

 

Just so you know... I'm 50 and for the last 30 years (off and on)

I've been a vegetarian and a vegan. Today, I use dairy (organic

only) and eat hormone free, cage free chicken and wild salmon.

 

I like dairy... always have. Big fan of yogurt. But, in addition to

moderation, the key is organic. If you don't go organic with

anything else, be sure you do with dairy products (and meat too)

This will limit your intake of estrogens and will greatly ease your

midlife transition. I've noticed a HUGE difference since using

organic dairy products exclusively.

 

Xenoestrogens from our foods, the environment and the products we

use every day are largely responsible (IMHO) for the increase of

infertility, uterine and breast cancers, prostate cancer and MUCH

more.

Just my $.02...I understand that dairy as well as meat is important

over the long term in building strong bodies, but the difference is

consuming 'RAW' milk, cheese, etc. and grass-fed beef, etc. Supposedly

the pasturization process is what is actually mucous forming in the

body, primarily because it's a substance that the body basically

doesn't recognize after everything in milk for example, is killed off,

including the 'good' enzymes.

I'm not sure why dairy is mucos forming, but I agree that raw is

best. Too bad that the commercial sources for raw milk (as well as

fruit juice)are extremely difficult to find. They are rare and

scattered and label " for animal consumption only " , which makes it

difficult to find the best sources if the farm won't devulge they sell

for " human consumption. "

 

I do disagree that dairy and meat are important over the long term. We

don't need as much protein as we once thought we did and there are

plenty of foods, if we eat enough variety, that will give us the

building blocks for protein. Food combining isn't even necessary to

make complete protein, which we also once thought was necessary. I'm

not a complete vegetarian, but it's not difficult for me to do.
