Guest guest
So, I went to the grocery store tonight... and when I went to the organic section, there was a 'bulletin' of sorts sitting where the soymilk should have been... saying that there is a worldwide shortage of soymilk due to a 'sudden increase in demand' and an apology to customers. They did have some, and I had decided on one (though it was pretty pricey...) but when I walked to where the other milk is kept, lined above it was a whole bunch of soymilk... which is odd... seeing as how there is a such a 'shortage...' when it comes to people shopping in the actual organic section...? Ah well. I have not tried it yet... and to be completely honest, I am a bit apprehensive. Up until a few days ago I drank skim cow's milk... and i guess I'm kinda worried that this 'vanilla' flavored soymilk will be too sweet? Or maybe just the opposite? I am going to try it tomorrow in some cereal. And if that doesnt appeal to me, I bought some chocolate syrup and I guess I thought I'd sort of start out making it chocolate soymilk, then gradually adding less syrup. See, the key here is getting off dairy. I've wanted to do this for years, but didnt have any support. I would love to someday go entirely vegan... i admire the discipline it takes to plan your meals out and read labels for everything, etc. And while I dont really eat much meat as it is... I guess I just dont want to start off to strong and then fall flat on my face. I think my point here is that I'm not going to be strict... yet. As far as everything other than dairy. And I dont think I can read each and every label yet... and I probably will slip up (like I said... so far giving up dairy has proven much harder than quitting smoking...), but it's to be forgiven and forgotten. I'm rambling, I do apologize. I still have not slept. I am going to bed now. Good night, and thanks for all the support! Lexi
Guest guest
Soy is one of the most highly allergenic foods on earth, almost as bad as cow's milk. Post 79890 has a soy symposium article that outlines the dangers of soy. It's not a good alternative to cow's milk. Why do you want to become vegan??? This has nothing to do with health. Humans are not vegetarian. Haven't been for over a million years, making vegetarianism one of the most unnatural diets out there. rik herbal remedies , DismalDorkess wrote: > > So, I went to the grocery store tonight... and when I went to the organic > section, there was a 'bulletin' of sorts sitting where the soymilk should have > been... saying that there is a worldwide shortage of soymilk due to a 'sudden > increase in demand' and an apology to customers. Guest guest
Lexi, I can't address the 'soymilk shortage' that you may be experiencing, lol, but I just wanted to offer a little encouragement. Doc has always stressed to make one small change at a time. Don't try to do a massive overhaul of your eating behavior, or you WILL fail. We're creatures of habit and we're battling both our willpower, and what our body tells us it wants (in my case, lots of chocolate! lol) He said to start by eating one organic banana every single day or something like that... a small, simple change that is absolutely do-able! And then several weeks down the road, add something else new. For now, you could just focus on replacing cows' milk. Soy milk is very different, and it will take some getting used to. There are better alternatives to soy, actually, that would be more beneficial to you. Doc says that the first choice would be goats' milk, but it's difficult to find and expensive when you do (at least here in small-town Midwest). Second choice is almond milk made with sprouted almonds (you can do this at home - ask Lisa de Haas and she'll give you the recipe). The only place I have found almond milk for sale retail (and it's probably not made from sprouted almonds, either, but I figure it's better than cows milk!) is at Meijer. And it's pricey, too, but it does taste pretty good. I like it best out of the alternatives. But what I have been using, slowly trying to wean my boys off cows' milk, is rice milk. It's not my favorite, but it works. I think the consistency is the biggest change... it's much thinner than regular milk, but if you've been drinking skim, it's probably comparable. But, it's an easy change to make, so we're slowly doing it. We used to go through 2 gallons of milk a week, and now we're down to a gallon or less. So we're making progress! Hang in there and start slow. You can do it! =o) hugs Tracy in Ohio Both life and death hold God's promises for me! - DismalDorkess herbal remedies Friday, April 14, 2006 1:37 AM Herbal Remedies - soymilk in such 'high demand'? Guest guest
Lexi, Considering all the problems with dairy (blood, pus, hormones, etc) I think you're making a wise decision. I gave it up about 14 years ago and have better health for it. I'm almost completely vegan now, and my husbands family have been vegetarians for generations - some consider vegan the oldest diet in the world. I didn't care for soy milk when I first gave up dairy so I just didn't use any milk on cereal for about a year (applesauce was a good substitute) and then soy tasted wonderful to me. There's also rice milk and many milks that can be made from nuts, seeds and grains. Let me know if you want recipes, or there are good vegetarian cookbooks - I just saw one today that was totally about milk replacers but don't remember the name of it right now, but could probably find it again... Some soys are sweeter than others, and some have so many additives there's no way it could be healthy in my opinion. Yes, it's hard to read labels all the time. Of course, from the e-mails I've seen from this group this week there's a lot of people that wouldn't suggest drinking soy. I haven't had a chance to read them yet, but will. It's still better than cow. Keep up the determination. You can do it!! VickiDismalDorkess wrote: Ah well. I have not tried it yet... and to be completely honest, I am a bit apprehensive. In the U.S.A., about 85% of the soy grown is GMO soy (genetically modified), and therefore anything produced using GMO soy cannot be sold as organic. Only certified organic soy can be used to make the organic soymilk. Jan / Michigan
Guest guest
What about the nationally produced "SILK" soy milk on there cartons they state that they do not use GM soy in their product? I have never seen a shortage of Silk as a matter of fact it is on sale this week for $2.50/ 1/2 gallon at Meijer in Michigan. - zoomom9 herbal remedies Sunday, April 16, 2006 10:25 PM Herbal Remedies - Re: soymilk in such 'high demand'? herbal remedies , DismalDorkess wrote:>> So, I went to the grocery store tonight... and when I went to the >organic section, there was a 'bulletin' of sorts sitting where the >soymilk should have been... saying that there is a worldwide >shortage of soymilk due to a 'sudden increase in demand' and an >apology to customers. >They did have some, and I had decided on one (though it was pretty >pricey...) but when I walked to where the other milk is kept, lined >above it was a whole bunch of soymilk... which > is odd... seeing as how there is a such a 'shortage...' when it >comes to people shopping in the actual organic section...? > > > Lexi>*********If you live in the U.S.A., its a shortage of ORGANIC soymilk....In the U.S.A., about 85% of the soy grown is GMO soy (genetically modified), and therefore anything produced using GMO soy cannot be sold as organic.Only certified organic soy can be used to make the organic soymilk.Jan / Michigan

It just means they use conventionally grown soy that is not GMO. " Organic soy " must be both Non-GMO *and* organically grown. I have read that the mfr of " SILK " uses a " mixture " of organic soybeans and Non-GMO soybeans to make their soymilk. Like other food mfrs that use Non-GMO soy, most of it is imported to the U.S.A., as even that is hard to find here. So, while the soy in SILK is all Non-GMO, it is not all " organic " . (I hope I explained that well enough to understand) Jan / Michigan
