[lists] Herbal Remedies - Nightshades

Hello,

Does anyone in the group have any sensitivities to any of the plants in a group called "nightshades." If so, does it cause you to have arthritis pain?

I am asking because I had a very hard time ever sleeping at night for several months due to pain in my lower back and right hip. I went to 3 different chiropractors thinking that my lower back was out and that maybe I had a pinched nerve because the pain was like a searing how iron. I think I have a rather high tolerance to pain, however, this was REALLY getting on my nerves. Fortunately, a friend, who has arthritis, sent me an e-mail about arthritis, with a web page to a doctor who has done extensive research on "nightshades" and one of the articles on it was written by a chiropractor who had patients with pain such as mine. Consequently, I started looking at what I was ingesting that might be in the "Nightshade" group of plants and realized that I had been taking at least 200,000 HU of Cayenne for over 2 and a half years, ever since I had a heart attack and Cayenne tincture "jump started" my heart. I don't want to quit taking Cayenne because when I do, my heart doesn't seem to do as well, however, I did go a few days without taking it and my right hip and lower back stopped hurting when I would go to bed at night or any other time of the day. I thought it was my imagination so I took Cayenne again and I woke up with my left shoulder having the same "burningsearingtoothache" type of pain that I had previously experienced in my right hip . The rotator cuff in my left shoulder was crushed over 20 years ago and my left humerus was broken right below the shoulder in a bad fall. I was told at that time that I would have arthritis in that shoulder and my left wrist after it healed. I never have had it in my shoulder and very little in my wrist. I am wondering in the effect of the nightshade plants are just on the weaker, previously parts of the body or what. Apparently not every one is effected by them, however, since we are all individuals with different metabolisms, this is not surprising.

I looked in the files under "nightshades" however, I did not find any information posted so if any one else has had any experience with this group of plants, please, I would like to hear from you.

Thanks,

Shirley

Hi Stuck, Thanks for your reply. I find it fanasiting that some people are apparently sensitive to certain nightshades, like your Mom is to white potatoes, and I am to Cayanne, but not to others while a lot of persons are not affected by any of them. Yams are not in the nightshade family. Tomaotes, white potatoes, all peppers (not black pepper) I found a lot of very interesting information on the web site that my Friend told me about, www.noarthritis.com . I have the exact same pain as the lady in the article written by a chiropractor at that web site and yet none of the chiropractors who were treating me acted as though they thought I was telling the truth about the pain so I was really frustrated until I stopped taking Cayanne. I think I am

"addicted" to it. It stops my sore throats when I have them and it also helps my heart to beat on a strong and regular beat, it also causes my right hip and lower back extreme pain when I lay down to sleep. Eggplants are in the nightshade group also as are tobacco products. I also use Cayanne in a Dr. Christopher mixture with eyebright and some other herbs as a eyewash every day to bring down the pressure in both of my eyes. Has worked great for that for about 5 years now. The pressure went from 25, and 26 down to 17 in both eyes and stays below 20, which is great. Thanks again for your response. It was great to hear something from somebody concerning the subject since I have gone all of my life without hearing anything about

nightshades except from farmers concerning the dangers of their livestock eating nightshades. Also, I knew that Belladona is a nightshade. That is all I knew.
