Guest guest
Does the film left on the dishes impact our health? I know that we can taste this film. I use Cascade Complete (powder) and often use vinegar in the rinse cycle because we do have hard water. I would love to hear about natural alternatives and what you folks use. This list is educating my whole family. My children gladly gave up the microwave Big huge thanks to all of you. Monica Grubb

Guest guest
I don't use a dishwasher anymore, precisely for this reason. I hated the film that it left on dishes. I don't get that film when I hand wash. Of course it helps that there are only two of us now. herbal remedies , The Grubb Family <dbgrubb wrote: > > Does the film left on the dishes impact our health? > > I know that we can taste this film. Guest guest
Detergents contain a nasty concoction of chemicals....just one is chlorine which can leave residues on dishes and leach into your food. Plus most of the fragrances are synthetically made from petrochemicals. Many (I feel like saying all) of the ingredients can cause allergic reactions and worse health-wise. There are some more bio- & eco-friendly options out there....one brand is called 7th generation & I've seen these products in average grocery stores (e.g. Kroger). More options are available at health stores. I don't have a dishwasher (wish I did though!), and in the past I have used 7th gen's unscented liquid soap (not for dishwashers) or made my own using baking soda, white vinegar, and a little hydrogen peroxide (food grade). I prefer scentless, but if you want it to smell nice, use a few drops of lemon or orange essential oils (of good quality). For caked on or burnt residues, sprinkle baking soda on the pan, moisten with a little hot water and leave it on overnight.....makes it easier to scrub off the next day. In a book I have, there is one " recipe " for a dishwasher detergent, which is: 3 tablespoons baking soda, 1 tablespoon borax, & 2 drops lemon essential oil (which I think is optional). You must rinse food off your dishes first though. I have not used this before so I can't say how well it does. (Though when visiting my parents, I have just used baking soda in their dishwasher.) I also don't have hard water, so you still might want to add a little vinegar. Hope this helps a bit! --Abby
