The common comfrey is not the one that is toxic to the liver. The Russian variety is the one in question. Either way though, as long as you do not use it long term, there should be no problem. I have used it (the root) off and on when necessary for years with no ill effects. It is my understanding that the family that suffered with liver damage drank comfrey tea 3 times a day for none months!! One must wonder why people do such stupid things! Herbs ARE medicines and should be treated with respect. Barb

This is not really a response to your question of the safety of comfrey

tea. It's more my personal rant about the concerns about different

herbs. It's absolutely astonishing that they can promote drugs with

such serious side effects that thousands of people die every year from

drugs, but if there are one or two cases of something going wrong with

a person who just happened to have taken a particular herb, suddenly

there are warnings everywhere about that herb not being safe. Talk

about a double standard!

I only use comfrey externally. I also and read that it is not good for internal use. Why would you want to take comfrey tea? hey thanks guys for your input. the reason for the tea is that a

lot of people promote this herb and are passionately writing about

it and its cures with it. i just read somewhere that there was just

one person who died from it long time back, she apperently was

having it for breakfast, lunch and dinner for years in big

proportions............and i'm not even sure if they really knew if

she died from that. it also seems a good calcium source, anyhoo, the

tea is used for sooo long, it is on the market and people grow their

own plants in the house/garden. i'm just curious about this.

thanks, rik

Comfrey works wonders for stomach ulcers, wound healing and for broken or fractured bones. It is known as "knit bone" for a reason. Barb

I Agree,

Seems if the big drug companies say that their drug will - cause nausea, faintness, ulcers, sleepyness, excitement, uncontrolled bowel dumping, cramping, frequent urination, dry mouth, heart palipitations, bad breath, trouble sleeping, anxiety, depression, well then that's just ok. But don't take an herb!, We don't know what will happen, you might even - get better.
