Pregnant - Need PAP?

Hi all,

I am 39 years old and recently found out I am pregnant. In 1996 I had a

malignant tumor on my cervix removed through conization. All was fine after

this until March last year when a pap came back " abnormal " . I freaked out

and went in for a biopsy after weeks of worry and getting no answers from

the dr. as to how bad it was or if it would spread to cancer, etc. The

biopsy came back clean and the dr. said " well, it's probably just an

infection then. Here's a cream, use it and come back for a follow up pap in

6 mos. " . I was so angry that he didn't tell me it could be just an

infection and let me worry for 2 months about this whole thing and put me

through that painful and invasive procedure so I didn't go back for the

follow ups because I'm not having any symptoms that would warrant it in my

opinion. He's not happy about that.

Anyway, now here I find myself pregnant and the midwife at the birthing

center I am going to said that I can have a pap done the next time I go in

to see her or not have one done, it's up to me. But she said I don't want

pregnancy hormones feeding cancerous cells either. So now I don't know what

to do. I really don't want the pap. Do I need to have one done or can I

let it go? What can I do to keep my cells from being abnormal during

pregnancy? Can't pregnancy itself make them appear abnormal?

Thanks for any answers you can provide.

Lana,

If I was in your position, I would go ahead and have the pap. Your midwife can do that right? It's just a test, it doesn't hurt, and it will give you information that will keep you from worrying through your entire pregnancy.

Personally, I prefer to be fully informed, then I can make my own decisions as to how to proceed. You don't have to use that other DR.

And I would certainly persue high nutrition and follow the pertinant info from the files on this site. You can do so much to keep yourself healthy with just a little effort. And that's what we all really want, isn't it.

Keep us posted.
