Guest guest
Hi, I'm Myranda, homeschooling mama to three kids in SC. Due to allergy problems, we've been moving towards a more organic lifestyle for several years now. If I've learned anything, it's that it all can't be done at once, unfortunately, unless you have the money to pay for it! We've kept our own chickens for meat and eggs for two years now, and we're about ready to begin raising turkeys and pigs for meat. Next year, if all goes well, we'll have a milk cow. I've had a half-hearted garden for the past three years, and this year I'm giving a lot more effort to that. Which brings me to my first question here..... I've already been raising mint and chamomile.... other than those, what are 10 must-have often-used herbs to grow in a home garden? (I say 10, cause that's the room I have for them this year lol) And if anyone has recommendations on where to get organic and heirloom seeds, both for the herbs and other veggies/fruit, I'd appreciate it! Oh, and I saw someone ask what DMSO is, but can't find that post now.... it's dimethyl sulfoxide, typically sold here in the US in feed stores such as TSC's for use in animals. It acts as an anti-inflamatory, both externally and internally. Worked wonders on a dog we had with arthritis, kept her going almost a year past what vets had said. I also have a friend who actually drinks the stuff daily (can't imagine it lol, it warms on contact or when mixed with water, and smells garlic-y) to keep herself symptom-free of fibro-m, and I've used it myself on muscle strains and sprains. Miranda, I'd certainly have a couple of varieties of basil, there are lots of them, and they have tons of medicinal uses, along with being totally tasty! What kind of growing region are you in? I also love tomatoes and red peppers, if you have enough sun.. : ) Scott.
Guest guest
Hi. I'm new to this group and am enjoying all the posts. One "must" in my garden is garlic. To find heirloom seeds try your favorite search engine and type in "seed savers exchange" or something like that. Guest guest
Hy Myranda, Wow - you are doing so well with your changes...keep it up! As far as herbs, I'm in the same position as you! We've moved to an area with an almost tropical climate after having lived in a deep freeze for many years. I've been wondering what herbs I should plant here too - it will be so much fun watching things grow instead of watching them die! I know I will do the usual culinary herbs - dill, basil (also used medicinally), oregano (same), chives, etc....but as for medicinal herbs, which is what I think you're wondering about, I don't have a long list yet. Here's what I'm thinking so far: Mullein Rosemary Thyme Lavender Elder (for the berries) St. John's Wort Yarrow Anyone know how difficult or easy these would be to grow? Any of those that are going to take over a space, and beyond? Thanks Jeanne >Message: 9 > Mon, 30 Jan 2006 16:21:35 -0500 > <myranda3 >Intro & what to grow question > > >Hi, > >I've already been raising mint and chamomile.... other than those, what >are 10 must-have often-used herbs to grow in a home garden?
