Guest guest
It didn't do too much for me but did help a friend of mine who took it at night. The only thing that helps my anxiety is 200 mg of magnesium 3 times a day. I got off buspar and xanax that way and have been off for almost 2 years now. Guest guest
I used to take 5HTP, if I took it before I went to bed it caused me to have nightmares. I have heard the same from others. I am not sure of the reason. --- jeanne_simons wrote: > It didn't do too much for me but did help a friend > of mine who took it at night. Guest guest
Has anyone used 5-HTP. Is it better then Melantonin for inducing sleep. I sometimes have hard time going to sleep. Diane
Guest guest
I have used 5-HTP as part of a protocol for treating depression. It should probably work for boosting melatonin and thus sleep because the pathway is Tryptophan => 5-HTP => serotonin => melatonin http://www.pharmacorama.com/en/Sections/Serotonin_2_1.php The conversion steps require various nutrients also so make sure you get enough Vit C, B complex and minerals: http://www.understand-andcure-anxietyattacks-panicattacks-depression.com/5-htp-M\ elatonin.html I would say the only caution against taking 5-HTP is if you are on anti-depressants already, especially those grouped as SSRIs (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). The reason for that is SSRIs cause serotonin to build up (for a reason) and 5-HTP can do the same and taking both together can cause serotonin to build up too high in the brain and it can be a dangerous situation. Hope that helps Sharon
Guest guest
Just adding my experience - I had a neurotransmitter test - collecting saliva at 2:30 in the morning when I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep - I was taking 200 mg 5HTP before bed but at that time not taking melatonin or anything else. The test showed the serotonin was TOO high and my melatonin was way LOW. So the serotonin didn't convert to melatonin. (I also had other neurotransmitters that are excitors that were high and calmers that were low - such fun) I now find that 100 mg of 5HTP PLUS spraying about 3 sprays of source naturals sublingual melatonin works better - and if I wake up and feel I'm not going to go back to sleep (unless it's within a couple of hours of getting up) I spray another couple of sprays. Obviously I have a problem making melatonin - that MAY change now since I'm taking methelB12 shots because I became functionally deficient in B12 and was borderline for a long time (while taking pills) - I read that B12 is necessary for the body to make melatonin.
