Just as the FDA is convening an advisory committee hearing (June 9-10)

about whether to expand the marketing license of antipsychotic drugs for

children, Medscape reports that compelling evidence from the early findings of a

study, Metabolic Effects of Antipsychotics in Children that raise serious

safety concerns about the use of antipsychotics in children. A sobering

earlier report in the Los Angeles Times by Melissa Healy focused on the

scientific evidence against the increased use of antipsychotic drugs. That it

did

not make waves is testimony to the media's dependency on pharmaceutical

industry advertising revenues. " This is very worrisome; frankly I have serious

concerns about these drugs, " says Dr. Steven Nissen, who is chairman of

the Cleveland Clinic's cardiovascular medicine department and serves as an ad

hoc advisor for FDA panels.
