Hello. This is the situation. A 33 year old male (who is an emergency room

RN...which makes this story all the more ironic)was dirt bike riding WITHOUT A

HELMET!!! He took a spill, fell off the bike and was knocked unconscious for a

short while(I am not sure how long). For a couple of days he was a bit dizzy

and finally decided to get an MRI. He has lost his sense of smell. He was told

that if he isn't able to smell within about 6 months he will have lost this

sense for good. My Q to this group...is there anything I can suggest to him to

help increase the chances of his regeneration? I do not know if it is just the

olfactory nerve that has be damaged or something else. Any suggestions would be

much appreciated.

Thanks, Kathleen

Kathleen, I've read that zinc is essential for a good sense of smell, and that

copper is used to utilize the zinc. There are tablets available that have both -

30 mg zinc with 2 mg copper. Check GNC, Solgar, or NOW brands.

My thoughts and prayers are with him for a speedy recovery.

I hope this doesn't sound insensitive- if you lose your sense of smell- do you

also lose your sense of taste?
