Guest guest
I am new to this group and to this area. I hesitate to list my maladies as they are so varied and the treatment for all of them are contrary to the treatment for each individual one, that I do not think there is an answer but hope someone does. I have, and this is too long a list by far but I have been dealing with them all, but one, for many years. ......Degenerative Disc Disease, Osteoporosis, Aortic Valve Reguritation, No spleen due to accident, fused spine, pneumothorax same reason, Diverticular Disease, and to leave out the minor ones, I have been diagnosed with hypoglycemia recently. I have many allergies or hypersensitivities to both prescribed medications as well as some herbs & vitamins, and just about anything but am particularly allergic to all analgesics, penicillin, aspirin, most antibiotics, all osteoporosis meds, and I am sure I left out a few. I am woman 73 yrs. old, but now I find I am at the end of my rope with just trying to find a doctor who can treat the whole body, or even a nutritionist, homeopathic person or anyone who can help me. I tried, despite telling my G.P. that I would not be able to tolerate this, Synthroid for the latest problem with the hypoglycemia. I immediately felt strange from the first day, but each day <I took it for a total of 5 days> it worsened, until yesterday when I had severe chest tightening, palpitations, nervous shaking, chills and got to the point where I thought I was dying. I called the doctor,s office only to be told to go to the E.R. I refused to do so as I did not want the millions of staph and other germs to add to my problems. Then I called the pharmacist and he told me that while this is not a very common occurence, it was side effects that I would have to just live with since I am on the smallest dosage of 25 mg. that they manufacture. This medication will cause my osteoporosis to worsen and I already have broken ribs from sneezing, interfere with the treatment of my aortic regurgitation and also find that I no longer can tolerate the tylenol w/codein, which was the only pain help I could tolerate. I have been in pain daily for 25 yrs. I was also told to stop taking the Synthroid immediately and wait for the doctors to figure out what to do with me. I only can, so far, take a muscle relaxant diazepam at night for pain and muscle contractions. If need be I could live with pain, but not with this Synthroid and it,s bad side effects. Can anyone even relate to all of this as upon reading it I cannot believe I have gotten to this age at all. If any person that posts here or knows anything I can do to help myself, please advise me. The doctors, while well meaning seem not to know how to deal with patients with multiple problems and I am certainly in that category. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My family is over 200 miles away and while I know we all have to die alone, I would like to at least see them before I do so. I am trying to return to the Pocono region which I left when my husband died as it is not affordable on Social Security alone, but have no choice now. Guest guest
Hi Ginny, I'm new to this group too and don't have the experience that many others have, but I feel horrible for you! Since I know very little about you, what I would recommend first, if you aren't doing this already, is to start eating a diet based on whole foods, as fresh as possible, organic if you can fit into your budget. Don't worry about macronutrients right now (proteins, carbs, and fats) because you can sort that out later. First step is real foods. Keep in mind that many primitive groups lived practically disease free and they ranged from the Inuits (or Eskimos) that ate a very high fat/low carbohydrate diet to the Kitavans that ate very high carb with low fat and even lower protein. The 7th Day Adventist were vegetarian and are long lived, but they live a very strict lifestyle and may be harder to emulate. And there are others that were in between. It appears that humans can adapt to many different kinds of ratios of these foods and you will probably find one that works better for you. Don't fear fats. Just avoid the high polyunsaturated vegetable oils like soy oil, corn oil, etc. I use coconut oil (it is like 97% saturated fat), butter, and olive oil (not as much as coconut oil). I remember reading something that Dr. Richard Schulz said. He said that people would come to him and expect some fancy, exotic herb to cure their ills, but after he cleaned up their lifestyle and their diet, they would often find that they didn't need any exotic herbs anymore...the lifestyle changes were enough. As someone who weight trains, there is a saying that you can't out-train a bad diet, and another one is you can't out-supplement a bad diet. I'm not saying that cleaning up you diet will fix everythign that is wrong with you, but it may reduce the number of things that need to be treated, and then you can zero in on the things that are causing you the most grief. You mentioned some problems with your heart. I get a newsletter from Dr. Bruce West called Health Alert and his specialty is the heart. One thing that I have learned from him, and applied succesfully is that you need the full B-Complex of vitamins for proper nutrition and that white flour and white sugar are devoid of these vitamins and what's worse, they add a few synthetics back in and throws the whole balance out of whack. You can't use B-Complex vitamins like B-50's or B-100's because they are synthetic and not in a natural balance (like what foods have all the B vitamin fractions at 50 mg!). You could buy some of the fancy supplements that are really effective (and expensive) or you can try Brewer's Yeast. You can buy a bottle of 250 tablets at Wal-Mart for under $3. So skip the breads, pastries, cookies, cakes, etc. and get your starches from potatoes, rice, or sprouted grain bread like Ezekial bread. The only other supplement that I might recommend would be a HCl tablet to help digestion. As we get older, we produce less and less stomach acids so we get less nutrition fromthe food we eat, so that should give you a bit of boost right there. I see you said that you were taking Synthroid for hypoglycemia... isn't Synthroid a thyroid med? I have a hypothyroid and adrenal issues that I take some expensive supplement for, but they have done wonders for me. I thought that my big problem was my thyroid but the adrenal supplements did the most good for me. But is you have a thyroid problem, it is imperative that you get your rest and reduce as many stresses as possible (that's probably the hardest thing to do!). Eat often. I had emailed Dr. Ray Peat about my thyroid and I was doing intermittent fasting at the time (one big meal a day), so I asked him if that could have had something to do with my thyroid problems, and leaving out all of the technical/medical talk, he basically said 'yes'. So to recap...whole foods, cut out the white flour and white sugar, try Brewer's Yeast and HCl tablets (WITH YOUR MEALS, preferably in the middle of your meals). Try to get outside in some fresh air for a stroll if possible and get some sunshine. Try this for a month or so and then re-evaluate where you are. Hopefully some things will be better and the list of things that still need fixin' will be shorter. Keep in touch with your doctor because if some of your problems start to clear up, they may have to adjust your meds or even cut some out. Sorry for the long winded response! Good luck and God Bless and hopefully we will hear that you are doing better! Will , " kopp_gina " <kopp_gina wrote: > > I am new to this group and to this area.
