Sudden Change in Blood Sugar Levels in Diabetics

My husband, who is 61-years-old and a type-2 diabetic, and whose blood

sugar levels have been well controlled for 2 years (since he was

diagnosed) with diet and glucophage, suddenly had a seizure at 6 AM in

the morning, after taking a dose of glucophage before going to bed,

something he does not ordinarily do. The paramedics gave him a

dextrose IV, and he revived almost immediately, so the hospital and

his private MD feel it was a sudden extreme drop in blood sugar which

caused the seizure. He has never experienced a seizure before.

His MD had him record his blood sugar levels for three weeks after he

got out of the hospital. They have strangely gone down to normal

levels, with only two 180 mg. readings during the whole three weeks,

and I would say his average blood sugar level (and he recorded levels

before and after meals and before going to bed, every day) ranged from

75 to 100. During the three weeks, he did lower his carb intake

considerably, even the complex carbs, but he has not eaten carbs

before, and his levels have never been this normal.

His MD wants him to have a scan of the pancreas to be " cautious " . So

I am worried that there is something amiss with his pancreas. If

anyone here has had an experience or knows of individuals who are

type-2 diabetics who suddenly experienced a " normalizing " of their

blood sugars, can you please let me know what the cause of this was?

(I know it may not necessarily be the cause of my husband's situation,

but I would like to know if there are reasons besides something being

wrong with the pancreas...)

Thank you,

Janet

Aside from metformin/glucophage, there are herbs and spices that loweer blood

sugar.  Did  he take cinnamon, turmeric, fenugreek,  before taking his pills at

bedtime?

There is a movie out that Dr. Gabriel Cousens produced about several

type II diabetics that completely CURED their diabetes by eating a raw

vegan diet. It happens more often than we know and it's as simple as

changing diet! Unfortunately, today's doctors are too quick to look

for " something else wrong " if our main dis-ease finally calms down.

Sure... get the test done, if you feel strongly about it, but also

remember to be happy he is doing so much better!

Joyfully,

Ravija

Dear Melly,

Before this sudden change, my husband was a big cinnamon-user,

because his MD had suggested using it to help control his high blood

sugar. He probably did have cinnamon before going to bed, as he used

it daily. So you're probably right...it wasn't only the glucophage,

it could have been the cinnamon also, that lowered his blood sugar

enough to cause a seizure, since he used to use it in large doses (on

yogurt in the evening...)

Thanks for the reminder that cinnamon lowers blood sugar...
