Guest guest
I just had my vitamin D tested for the first time and my level is 19. I'm uneasy about taking cod liver oil given the controversy I keep reading about, that the vitamins are destroyed in processing and synthetic ones are added back in, including a synthetic vitamin A. So I'm considering taking a D3 supplement in capsule form. If I go this route, what would be the right amount to take per day to correct my deficiency? Thanks, Mark
Guest guest
Yesterday I attended a major Vitamin D conference at UCSD in San Diego. All the big guns were there... the doctors and researchers from around the country who do the actual research and trials. Holistic doctors were there, MD's, chiropracters, osteopaths, cardiologists, pediatricians, even dermatologists, and many more. The information they gave was astounding. Much of it is on this website: _www.vitamindhealth.org_ (http://www.vitamindhealth.org) . This is the website of Dr. Michael Horlick, one of the major investigators who has written many books on this subject, and who gave a terrific presentation of the findings about the epidemic deficiency of vitamin D in this country. How sunscreen has been terribly destructive to our health... it interferes with the absorption of UVB rays which are what make vitamin D in the skin, it allows UVA to get through to the skin, but blocks UVB which is just backward from what you want. To date there have been no randomized trials by the FDA or sunscreen manufacturers to show that sunscreen protects against melanoma. They simply can't show that it does. The atmosphere also prevents UVB from getting through to make vitamin D even if you are outside. The UVB band is very narrow compared to the UVA band, so much more UVA gets through. If the sky is overcast, no UVB. If you are behind glass, no UVB. If those mysterious lines in the sky... chemtrails we call them, have been dumped and spread out to reduce global warming... they filter out the UVB healthful rays. Amazingly, Australia and New Zealand have the highest rate of melanoma than anywhere in the world. And they have the highest ozone layers... which is again, backward from what we would think. The ozone layer is thick and filters out the UVB. High lattitudes as well in the northern latitudes, Norway, Finland, Canada, even American north states above 40 degrees latitude... above San Francisco... have high rates of melanoma, from not getting ENOUGH sun. It may feel hot on your skin, and you may even burn, but that's from the UVA rays, not the UVB's which are more fragile and need to penetrate deeper into the derma to make the vitamin D. And furthermore, get this, most melanoma does not occur even on the parts of the body that are exposed to the sun. People who have indoor jobs and rarely go outside get melanoma... on legs, trunk, even armpits! Vitamin D supplements defeat diabetes, cancer, pancreatic, ovarian, breast, prostate... high blood pressure, athrosclerosis, heart disease, inflammation, C-Reactive Protein (a cardiovascular disease marker), vascular stiffness, blood clots, muscle tissue, stomach disfunction, arthritis, everything in your body needs Vitamin D. If the evolutionists are right, we started out in the sea. That is where Vitamin D3 comes from, phytoplankton. It does not grow on land. When we crawled out of the sea we got our Vitamin D from the sun. There are no plants that contain Vitamin D3, except in the ocean. Milk has it added. Only in cod fish oil, or oily fish such as tuna or salmon can you buy it in cans. Those fish ate the plankton. Farmed salmon does not contain it... those fish eat junkfood the fish farmers toss to it. Farmed fish doesn't contain much of anything good anyway. But their pretty red color is appetizing, until you realize it's from red dye tossed into the food too. I have read on line that vitamin D2 supplements are made from animals, but I don't know which ones or how that might be. At the conference they did not mention that, but they did say that you can use either Vitamin D2 or D3 to increase your levels, both work equally as well in the body. So I don't know why they are pushing D3, that was not explained either. Currently there is a drive on to get the public's attention to the need for Vitamin D. All tissues need vitamin D. All tissues need all nutrients. Serum levels of Vitamin D for all ages should be between 40 and 60 and for breast cancer patients, they recommend serum levels of 72 ng/ml. Breast cancer victims all have insufficient levels of Vitamin D and though it will not cure the cancer, by bringing the level up to optimum it will stop further metastasis. The scientists at this convention recommended taking 5000, (yes five thousand) IU of D3 supplements for three months and get levels checked again. When you have reached 60 ng/dl then drop back to 2000 daily forever... for adults, and 1000 for children. Interesting too, mothers who's Vitamin D levels were low gave birth to babies who either became sick within the first month, or were subject to developing Type 1, diabetes. But by giving babies and small children D supplements they prevented type 1 diabetes from occurring in those nutrient rich kids. You can try the website _http://www.grassrootshealth.org/_ (http://www.grassrootshealth.org/) which was the organization that sponsored the conference in San Diego yesterday. It was put together by a local breast cancer survivor who contacted the doctors and researchers there and who eagerly spread the word to other professionals to attend. The grassroots organization is trying to do just that... get a grassroots movement to have everybody tested and treated for Vitamin D deficiency, which could lead to major reduction of disease and illness in the entire population. It is a movement to understand and join. I just ordered from _www.crp.org_ (http://www.crp.org) six bottles of liquid, one ml gives 5000 IU vitamin D3 daily. Going to give them to my family members for Christmas. Then I saw that Carlson's has an even better deal... liquid vitamin D3 where ONE DROP contains 2000 IU ! One bottle lasts a whole year! Please look into this... and remember, if you consult your MD he/she probably won't know a thing about it. All this new discovery has taken place within the last ten years and most docs have been out of med school longer and still think the minimum daily requirement of 400 IU for prevention of rickets is enough to keep all your cells healthy, including bones, blood and brain. Don't even bother asking. Check it out for yourself. Life Extension labs does the test, and at the conference they mentioned that it was one they recommended. I didn't write down any others in my notes. Good luck all. Marji **************Stay in touch with ALL of your friends: update your AIM, Bebo, Facebook, and MySpace pages with just one click. Guest guest
Actually D2 is an artificial Vitamin made by irradiating certain plants. The natural form of Vitamin D is D3 which is the kind our bodies make from UV-B rays. Of course in some parts of our country there are no UV-B rays available in the winter months so supplementation is necessary. Some studies at Creighton University and if I remember correctly University of South Carolina Medical School show that much higher levels of D2 are required to overcome Vitamin D deficiency than D3. In another study with post menopausal African American women some took 800IU a day of D3 and the others took a placebo. The ones on the placebo had three times the flu and colds that the ones who took 800IU. A third group took 2000IU had almost no cases of flu or colds. The problem with taking 2000IU of Vitamin D3 with cod liver oil is the problem of Vitamin A toxicity. JD

Guest guest
Rita, according to the doctors at the Vitamin D conference your information that taking more than 2000 IU vitamin D3 will cause an overdose... I presume that's what you mean... is incorrect. At the conference they said that that dosage was part of the misinformation that prevails within the medical community... it really needs to be higher to increase your present level. The prescription to take 5000 units a day is intended for those of us who are deficient at present. The conference doctors said that includes really ALL of us. Once your level reaches your goal, 40 to 60 nanograms per deciliter, (ng/dl) you want to cut back to 2000 units a day to maintain that level. That may be what your doctor has heard, and why he said not to take more. However, at the conference they spoke of trials where they gave people 30,000 units and all that happened was it diminished over time. No damage to the body in any way resulted. You can read some of the information that was presented at the conference here: Scroll down to about page 45 to the section on toxicity. Trials showed that there was no toxicity under 30,000 iu a day. This link was part of the presentation at the conference, but it was accompanied by a doctor explaining all the graphs. Hard to understand without the text, but there are some conclusions given around page 45 and further. _http://www.grassrootshealth.org/_download/Heaney%20GrasssrootsHealth.pdf_ (http://www.grassrootshealth.org/_download/Heaney%20GrasssrootsHealth.pdf) **************Stay in touch with ALL of your friends: update your AIM, Bebo, Facebook, and MySpace pages with just one click. Guest guest
Rita, at the bottom of this message I have posted information on vitamin D toxicity. I did not keep the link from the entire article; I just kept what was of interest to me. So I cannot provide the source for this snippet of information. Still, I think it is helpful to know. Carolyn >Posted by: " Rita Reya " azcallin azcallin >i heard from other holistic doctors that never take more than 2000 as >the body cannot discard extra of it as it does vit c and you will have >problems later as it builds ? >>--- On Fri, 12/5/08, Mark Fletcher <@markleefletch er.com> wrote: >>Marji, >>Some fascinating info there. The patient may experience constipation alternating with diarrhea, or have tingling sensations in the mouth. The toxic dose of vitamin D depends on its frequency. In infants, a single dose of 15 mg (600,000 IU) or greater may be toxic, and has to exceed .5 mg (20,000 IU) per day over a prolonged period to be toxic in infants. In adults, a daily dose of 1.0-2.0 mg (40,000 - 80,000) of vitamin D may be toxic when consumed for a prolonged period. A single dose of about 50 mg (2,000,000 IU) or greater is probably toxic for adults. The immediate effect of an overdose of vitamin D is abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting, not dry mouth and eyes . Toxic doses of vitamin D taken over a prolonged period of time result in deposits of calcium crystals in the soft tissues of the body that may damage the heart, lungs, and kidneys. For people who have trouble with supplements, I recommend sunbathing during the warmer months and sun tanning parlors in the colder months. Guest guest
Carolyn, your description of vitamin toxicity is very much the same as was read to me from the Vitamin Research Products archives. And, like yours said, it takes thousands of IUs to reach toxic levels, nowhere near those are we recommending. I just found a video that answers most questions posed on this thread, and many that weren't thought of yet. It's on the VRP website, where I bought my 5000 IU vitamin D liquid supplements. I just listened to it... it's almost an hour long, but it practically covers most of what I learned in a whole day at the conference. There are many articles and videos available to anyone who wants to learn, free, from Vitamin Research Products, Inc. I HAVE NO AFFILIATION WITH THIS COMPANY. I JUST USE SOME OF THEIR PRODUCTS, IODORAL, ATP COFACTORS AND NOW, VITAMIN D3 DROPS. I JUST LEARNED ABOUT THE RESEARCH AVAILABLE TO READ ON THEIR WEBSITE. To access it, go to _www.vrp.com_ (http://www.vrp.com) , then find " Webinars " down at the bottom (web seminars), in the list you'll find " The Many Faces of Vitamin D: What Everyone Should Know. " You will need to sign up to access the Webinars, but it's worth it, you'll come back often. I just listened to it and it backs up everything we have said here, plus more, and will put your minds at ease. The only thing that wasn't addressed is why anyone would have high serum calcium levels as was asked here. It did repeat what I had heard at the conference, that calcium is not absorbed without vitamin D. Check it out. Guest guest
Q: " Just how much vitamin D does a Caucasian mowing the lawn in shorts and a T shirt get in two hours on a summer day? If 2000 IU is dangerous, why do not lots of people suffer dire consequences from moderate sun exposure? " Alobar A: " The fact is this: Most of us produce about 20,000 units of vitamin D after about 20 minutes of summer sun. " - John Cannell, MD
Guest guest
I have read numbers like 30,000 IU/ hr under moderate skin exposure at noon during summer months... which would serve to explain why we are not poisoned by higher D3 Doses.
