Are there any supplements I can take for severe panic anxiety disorder?

Dear Joanne,

I had severe panic attacks for many years. I saw a nutritionist who

did not put me on any specific supplement for panic disorder, but he

emphasized any supplements that would boost the immune system, as well

as, of course, a good multi-vitamin.

For me, although supplements are crucial for this disorder, diet was

even more important...and I found that within a week of eliminating

all caffeine, white flour products and foods that contained sugar,

eliminating alcohol, and reducing carbohydrates made a noticable

difference in reducing the intensity of the panic attacks. (I

especially noticed that eliminating caffeine helped, even though I was

not drinking more than 2-3 cups of coffee a day.) Although this may

not be the case for you, my panic attacks were largely caused by

hypoglycemia, and when my blood sugar dropped, I would experience

panic, so this is why the change in diet helped so much. Also, it is

important to eat several small meals a day containing protein, to

stabilize your blood sugar, rather than three large meals.

Lastly, it was found that I had a hormonal inbalance (my worst panic

attacks occurred during times of hormonal change, such as puberty,

after having my son, and now I am in the midst of a challenge with

depression, as I am in menopause.) I found that using one of the

over-the-counter progesterone creams helped with the hormonal

inbalance, and now that I am in menopause, I use both estrogen cream

(from natural sources) and the progesterone cream.

I hope this is helpful...and I hope other members know of specific

supplements that help with panic disorder. I have tried the herbs

which are supposed to be calming, such as valerian and passionflower,

but they have not been helpful to me. I remember that Carlton

Fredericks, in his books on hypoglycemia, used to recommend using a

spoonful of brewer's yeast in a small glass of juice immediately upon

awakening...I don't know if this would still be recommended. I do

tend to feel vulnerable to anxiety when I first awaken, so I use a

high-quality protein shake first thing in the morning, and this is

very helpful to me, as it stabilizes my blood sugar.

Good luck to you, as I know panic attacks can be brutal...

Janet

Dear Joanne,

You can improve your emotional state by improving your nutrition; by

making sure that every body cell receives optimal amounts of every

essential nutrient - including supplementing your body with loving

attention!

The common underlying feature of virtually all problems presented by

my clients is emotional pain and suffering. Whether the presenting

complaint is anxiety, depression, problems in relationships, feelings

of inadequacy, or whatever, pain and its consequences are probably

the fundamental reason for seeking help.

As a cure, I suggest that you become friendly with your disorder, and

use it as your ally in creating order within. " How do i do this? " ,

you might be thinking.

When all problems are defined as 'pain' it is easier to self-examine

and treat each problem from a genuinely inquisitive point of view. If

I were you, I would be interested in the nature (shape, density,

weight, temperature, colour) and location (head, throat, heart, solar

plexus, abdomen, lower back) of your unique discomfort, Joanne.

The primary goal of your therapy is the creation of comfort,

pleasure, health, success and happiness, n'êst pas?

Therefore, a therapeutic avenue for you to explore today (and the

next few days should you feel inclined) could be to find some quiet

time for meditation in safe and comfortable surroundings (background

music optional) where you can promote the thoughts, feelings, and new

behaviours required for you to experience comfort or pleasure, not to

decide how to attack and eliminate anxiety.

As you begin thinking and doing things in ways that produce comfort

and pleasure, the anxiety disappears automatically.

Do let me know what changes you experience as you unfold,

I wish you success in all your endeavours,

Rupert

I wonder if Bach's Rescue Remedy might be helpful.

If your skin itches, it would be good to cut down or eliminate " hot "

foods like spices, tomatoes, peppers, vinegar, fermented foods, etc.

Friends,

As I look at Janet's post it brings up a lot for me. As my

depression gets bad I tend to not eat, so it worsens. I too am in

the throws of a hormonal change. My issues are worse in the

morning. Caffeine is the most deadly for my anxiety... causing an

attack sometimes within 15 minutes.

I also get panic in the middle of the night so my sleep cycle is

horrific. St. Johns and Valerian before bed does help this one.

Add to my true confessions I am addicted to alcohol after years of

trying to cope (what therapists call self medicate).

I find liquid proteins such as she recommends in the morning a huge

help. I also keep a protein bar beside the bed so if I get hit in

the middle of the night with panic I can balance out my blood sugar.

Be well... this is a tough condition, that is hard to deal with as

you get to the point you just aren't dealing.

I have had some limited success with Rescue Remedy, depending on the

severity of my symptoms.

I would suggest kava over other calming herbs. It is very good for

extreme stress. The advice to eat no sugar or refined flours is also

something that may help too.

Re: Panic Attack

This was suggested by a homeopathic doctor:

Aconite, also called Aconitum Napellus 30C

First, try the doses as they come from the bottle by placing 2 pellets

under your tongue and letting them dissolve. Dispense these directly

from the cap to your mouth without touching them.

All homeopathic remedies, including Aconitum Napellus 30C, can

dissolved in water for frequent consumption. The instructions for this

are:

Take 4 pellets of homeopathic remedy and place in a plastic bottle

that you can cover ( a 16-24 oz. bottle that water comes in is fine).

Fill with clean water (most tap water has a lot of nasty stuff in it).

Shake about 50 times by pounding bottom against the palm of your had

or on a big book. Take a sip as needed remembering to shake at least

10 time prior to each sip. When you get down to the last third of the

bottle you can add more water ands shake. There is no need to add more

pellets. In this form, Aconite can be taken as often as necessary

because it varies the dose.

When taking it regularly in regular pellet form you run the risk of

" proving the remedy " . What that means is that you run the risk of

exhibiting the same symptoms you wish to address with the remedy.
