Guest guest
Hi.. newbie from ohio here. Have some nutritional questions for you all. I'm going to try to gravitate towards a more " Whole Foods " type diet. Not to confuse that with the store, this basically means i'm trying to take in more veggies and fruits in their whole/raw forms cut the refined and processed crap etc... My question is this. I've been to an acupuncturist that advised me that my consitution is such that i will do better with steamed veggies than raw. And ironically I hate to cook. lol.. well i don't mind cooking, I'm just one of those gals thats always on the go so quick is top on my list too. Can steamed veggies keep for reheating? Should I avoid those steamer bags in an effort to avoid plastics chemical contamination? (this is another place where i want to alter my lifestyle.. cut down on plastics etc...) Also, any nutrition advice on this front is very much appreciated! So far my plan is to pick up sprouted grain bread and keep it frozen-- just take out enough that I think i'll need for the day (like 2 slices) and some fresh fruits. Thanks bunches. Guest guest
Hi April, Welcome - and well done on taking control of your health. As for the raw vs. cooked debate, personally I don't believe in making sweeping generalisations and saying a person should only eat one type of food. From my naturopathic nutrition studies, we are taught that raw veg and fruit tend to exert more 'eliminatory pressure' - that is they tend to help people detox faster because they have greater vitality or life force. " Great " you may say, but the answer is - not always for all people. Some people can feel sick and exhibit all sorts of unpleasant symptoms (called aggravations) if their cells detox at a faster rate than their organs are able to eliminate from the body (i.e. the kidneys and bowel primarily). For many people, unless a serious health problem looms, slow and steady is a more manageable state to be in. So really do what feels right for you. I would not recommend re-heating steamed veg. Every time you heat and re-heat food you lose a few more of the more heat sensitive nutrients (Vitamin C, B vits, enzymes), so cooking once is really the maximum damage you would want to do. It doesn't take very long at all to lightly steam fresh veg. I think the steamer bags would be ok in a pinch, but really I would recommend a proper vegetable steamer (which is usually a metal or glass basket) to put over a pot of boiling water. Good luck!
