Swelling...sorry so long...

Just a stab, first I'd try a B-complex vitamin for a few days, especially B6,

which is said to regular salt-water balance, but maybe you already know if you

take any of the Bs separately you must also take the complex so more of one

doesn't throw off the balance of others.

 

I know you said you can't eat salt, but it's possible you need more of it. I had

a doc tell me years ago to take salt for low BP, which is regulated by the

adrenal, which needs salt. Just a little may make you hold fluid, but a lot may

be better. Seems if you have a little your body wants to hold it with fluid, but

if you have extra it will leave and take some fluid with it.

 

If you are drinking caffeine and taking diuretics you may be low on electrolytes

and need to take more potassium-rich foods and/or an electrolyte supplement. And

be sure to drink enough water.

Hello...

 

I was just wondering if anyone had any insight to share regarding my

swelling issue...

 

I'm 31, female, and I have Hashimoto's Disease and multiple food

allergies. I've cleaned out my diet (to the extent that I can safely

eat about five things). My diet is high in fat (nuts and avocado oil

are all I can tolerate) and I eat a good amount of peeled potatoes

(plain) and plain, organic turkey and chicken breasts. (No seasoning,

no processed food, etc...) Could too much fat be a problem, even if

it's really healthy fat?

 

In the past few months, I've experienced bouts of swelling that can

add about 10-15 lbs to my body weight in a matter of a couple of days.

The swelling is all over: eyelids, fingers, ankles, tummy...

 

I've tried dandelion root, b6, vitamin c, and OTC diuretics without

any success. The only thing that seems to help is drinking insane

amounts of caffeine and not eating any salt at all (which makes my

already-low blood pressure plummet, and leaves me open to passing out

when I stand up too quickly).

 

My doctor has tinkered with my thyroid medication, and now he's saying

that an RX diuretic may be what is needed...

 

My weight is on the low side of normal, but if I drink ANY water or

anything else non-caffeinated (I drink diet pepsi and diet 7 up, but

removing diet soda from my diet makes the swelling unbearable, so I'm

not going to try to get rid of them again until I can control the

swelling), I get so swollen that it's actually taxing to breathe and

my skin gets shiny from stretching. !!!

 

I work out daily (cardio and yoga), and I swell badly when I lift

weights so I've stopped that for now. I live in Chicago, so it's not

really hot--especially right now.

 

Can anyone think of anything that might be causing this? My blood

work is excellent, I'm in really good shape, but the swelling is so bad!

 

Thanks in advance for anything you can think of that might help, even

if it's just to say that taking an RX diuretic might be helpful.

Thank you so much for all the information!

 

I saw my physician, and he thinks that I have dehydrated myself by

drinking diet soda so much, so that when I do take in some

non-caffeinated liquid, my body just hoards it and won't let it go.

 

He put me on a low-dose RX diuretic, and I lost all 17 added pounds in

two days. It was scary, but he thinks that once the caffeine and

aspartame are out of my system, I'll be able to move fluid out more

effectively without a diuretic.

 

And YES, I need to start taking my B Complex again! My nutritionist

put me on some Bs, and I quit taking them because I thought they might

be contributing to the swelling.
