Oxidative Stress

Oxidation occurs in our bodies every second of every day. This

sounds bad, and it is. Think of oxidation as rusting that occurs on

metal. The difference is that it is in our bodies and happens much

faster. What happens when you cut an apple in half? It turns brown

before your eyes. That is oxidation. Oxidation and Chronic

Inflammation have been linked to disease processes(cardiovascular

disease and cancer make up the top 2). Tobacco smoke, alcohol,

stress, lack of sleep, a poor diet, pollution, and excessive amounts

of sunlight are all contributors to oxidation. This in turn results

in the unwanted formation of Free Radicals.

What is a free radical?

They are atoms with at least one unpaired electron. In excess, free

radicals produce harmful oxidation that can damage cell membranes,

accelerate the aging process, and lead to certain ailments.

How does the body fight free radicals?

Tha answer is antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent free radicals from

potentially damaging millions of healthy, functioning cells by

donating an electron to unstable free radicals.

Where do I get antioxidants?

The body makes some of them, but we need more protection.

Antioxidants can only be obtained through fruits and vegetables. The

USDA recommends that we consume 5-9 servings of fruits per day. In a

study, 90-95 percent of Americans are not getting the USDA

recommended daily allowance of fruits and vegetables.

Want to live a Balnced Life?

Eat more fruits and vegetables. Add variety and color. An apple ,

banana, or orange everyday is not enough. Darker pigmented fruits

contain more antioxidants and phytonutrients. Make it a lifestyle

change, not a temporary inconvenience.
