Christopher Maingot's excellent letter below, gives us a real good reason on

why it is essential to buy organic food; and for strengthening regulations

instead of relaxing them for industry profits....

" Ask yourself why organic farmers have more sperm and less cancer,

depression, suicide, birth-injured or brain-damaged children than those who use

pesticides. A total of 76 US baby foods were checked and found to contain 16

different pesticides. It is estimated that 55% of all fruits and 29% of all

vegetables contain toxic chemicals, and half of these can cause cancer. Could

this

be related to the 25% increase in brain cancer in children in the past 25 to

50 years? Twenty million children under five years of age eat an average of

eight types of pesticides a day. Ninety percent of the children from six months

to five years eat an average of 13 chemicals that damage the nervous system

each day. About 108 pesticide types were found on 22 different fruits and

vegetables, and as many as 10 to 37 different types can be found on a single

apple. "

ranks these products as moderately hazardous. The EPA's classifications of

carcinogenicity have changed three times over the last 15 years. "

Oh golly I wonder why? These changes are the raison d'être for the so called

" ...Health Canada says the Food & Drugs Act must be “modernized†because it

has a narrow focus on safety. The proposed new legislation will replace the

safety focus with a focus on risk benefits. The “health†regulatory agency

will promote genetically modified and ‘novel’ food, gene therapies,

bio-pharmaceuticals, reproductive technology, transplants of animal organs to

humans,

cloning, and life patenting. No evidence of safety will be required.

The unstated goal of the proposal is to bring health protection legislation

in line with the government of Canada’s economic policy. In effect, economic

values have primacy over health and environmental safety. A new ‘Canada

Health Protection Act’ would:

1. Shift from health protection (‘duty of care’) to risk management;

2. Prevent the application of the Precautionary Principle where its needed

most;

3. Shift the burden of proof (products are presumed safe - harm has to be

proven);

4. ‘Manage’ the damage (irreversible harm and uncontrollable hazards);

5. Avoid liability for regulatory negligence;

6. Allow direct-to-consumer drug advertising.

The government and industry elites have made their choice: economic growth

and corporate profits are to trump the protection of citizens’ health. The

evidence indicates that the federal health and safety regulatory agencies have

been captured by industry. These agencies and are now rigged to deceive the

public. It’s time for the people of Canada to take back these agencies.

Canadians don't want their health protection weakened and they don't want to be

lied

to.

Canada’s strategy is ‘it is better that 10 hazardous products be approved

to the detriment of human and environmental health than that one safe product

be erroneously restricted’. This helps explain why Canadian health and safety

regulatory programs are open and transparent to industry but closed and

secret to the public. The Royal Society of Canada’s Expert Panel on GM food

said

it is better to err on the side of human and environmental safety than to err

on the side of the risk.

The future of health protection is too important to be left in the hands of “

expertsâ€. Science cannot provide definitive answers about what is dangerous

or what risks society should take. Strong public involvement in the ‘politics

of risk’ is needed to save lives, protect public health, the health of

future generations, the sustainability of medicare, as well as the health of

democracy in Canada. Don't leave it to skillful corporate lobbyists in Ottawa to

determine what risks are acceptableâ€. If we continue to let industry set the

safety standards, there will literally be no limit to what they will put into

our blood stream or have us swallow.

Jane Jacobs has wise advice that can serve us well in the fight to defend

our safety rights: “Fight what is wrong. Get as many people as possible to

understand. Have as good a time doing the fighting as you can.†" ...

The paradox of searching for a cancer cure

Letters to the Editor - It's highly recommended by health experts that we

should consume five servings of fruits and vegetables daily for better health.

And most of us will follow this advice to reduce the possibility of being

plagued by dreaded cancers.

Our fruits and vegetables, however, are treated with pesticides and

fungicides, such as Imazalil and Thiabendazole (brand name Mintezol), also

intended

for the treatment of multi-type parasites in humans (worms). Some of the

listed side-effects for Mintezol, a prescribed pharmaceutical, are anorexia,

nausea, vomiting, parenchymal liver damage, dizziness, drowsiness, headache,

numbness, hyperirritability, convulsions, collapse, confusion and depression.

Imazalil and Thiabendazole have been classified by the U.S. Environmental

Protection Agency as " likely " to cause cancer.

Imazalil is very toxic to aquatic organisms and the World Health

Organization ranks these products as moderately hazardous. The EPA's

classifications of

carcinogenicity have changed three times over the last 15 years.

These chemically designed and manufactured products will cause loss of

appetite, diarrhea, seizures, mental/mood changes and yellowing of the skin or

eyes.

Test animals have experienced symptoms including goose flesh (or goose

bumps) due to the excitation of hair follicles, muscle unco-ordination, reduced

arterial tension, tremors and vomiting. Contact dermatitis has been noted in

some cases in sensitive individuals.

These products are made and sold by the same pharmaceutical research

laboratories still searching for cancer cures.
