Well Water?

Hi. I have lived with well water most of my life. Some is purely excellent

and some is disgusting. Some smells like rotten eggs…sulfur.

At one old farm house we moved into we all got sick for weeks till we

discovered it was a bad well. Eventually we got over it as our systems

adjusted, but for the most part we did not drink it at all. And, none of

our company did. I poured a gallon of bleach down the well every few months

and it helped.

On the other hand, my daughter has an artesian deep spring well with the

purest water on earth. I have well water where I am now that goes through a

commercial filter system and that is good. But, I do not drink it because I

do not want those minute chemicals in my system, and I bring home gallon

jugs of my daughter’s water for all my drinking needs.

Every well is different. When you move in take some water from the kitchen

tap and fill a clear quart jar, cap it and set it on the window sill in the

sun. After a week or so you will see the color change and sediment settle

on the bottom if there is any. Pure water will not change color, nor will

there be any sediment.

There are many good companies that successfully treat well water.

If you drill a new well, hire a diviner to find water. You might be able to

do it yourself. When you drill, go beyond the first underground rivers to

the deepest well you can attain, maybe 250 feet or more, to get the purest

water. An investment well worth the money.

Good luck to you, Everyday water is probably the most critical necessity.

Even bathing and showering it goes through your skin so you want the purest.

I would suggest you call your County Agent to ask for information regarding:

1. How to get local help to have your well water tested and what your locale

is testing for in well water.

2. The agent's opinion (and be sure to get 3 other local opinions before

acting on these. . some are very expensive and maybe unnecessary) on best

filtering devices for your well system, depth of well, how much

agriculture/dairy production is going on over your aquaifer (which can tell you

how how contaminated your water table might be, if there are any sources of

Industry that could be contaminating your water table, etc) and some idea of

the cost of all this.

3. Get to know your neighbors and ask their advise on well water issues. Do

not be surprised if they differ in opinions! I cannot tell you how important

it is to have a personal relationship of trust and goodwill with a GOOD well

water maintenance/repair agency. These folk should know what kind of pump you

have, how deep your well, your capacity for storage, etc.

If you have never lived with a well system, the agent might also have very good

information on the necessary maintenance for such a system (which can be pretty

intensive if you are not used to being responsible for your water quality and

quantity), advising you on your how and what to do in case of emergencies, local

repair men to call, etc.. As a child, I learned all this living as the oldest

child in a large rural family, but moved to the city and did not return to the

country until I was 65 and had a huge learning curve all over again! But I

love my water and taking care of it is a true blessing that I am gratefur for

each day! Norma Pirie

DiAnne-

Thanks for the feedback. I believe the Realtor said the well was much

lower I want to say (400-600 ft). Any commercial units you recommend

their are so many and some are misleading? My aunts well water is not

good. I am a water person, I drink upwards of a gallon a day.

Thanks again!
