Guest guest
Good news encouraging us to keep up the pressure! After more than three months in jail, Robert Lovelace is a free man again. On May 29th the Ontario Court of Appeal in Toronto released the former chief of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nations with time served and fines suspended until decision, details of which have yet to be released. At the second round of contempt charges in Kingston on June 2nd all remaining charges against Bob Lovelace, Harold Perry and six non-naive neighbours of a potential uranium mine site north of Sharbot Lake were dismissed by Judge Cunningham after provincial police and the firm that's prospecting on the land said they're not interested in pursuing the case. BUT THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER. Cunningham's original injunction, which prohibits protesters from getting within 200 metres of the proposed mine site on Hwy 509 or any Frontenac Ventures employees, remains in place. Those who break that injunction could find themselves in court or jail. Frontenac Ventures is still intending to drill and has clear cut an area do to so. There could still be a uranium mine if they find a viable deposit. WE ARE STILL ASKING THE ONTARIO GOVERNMENT FOR A MORATORIUM ON URANIUM MINING. UP-COMING EVENTS: PLEASE COME OUT AND HELP Thursday, June 12 at WestFest Hand out flyers and get petitions signed. We are meeting at 6:30 outside the Starbucks at Roosevelt and Richmond Rd. We will have extra " kNOw-uranium.org " T-Shirts in case you don't have one. Friday June 13 at noon COME AND JOIN US FOR ANOTHER VIGIL. From June 13-15 the Ontario Liberal Party is holding their Annual General Meeting at the Conference Centre. Let's raise awareness among the delegates and the general public. Just Say No to Uranium Mining in Ottawa/Gatineau Watershed Meet on the bridge by the old train station (between Elgin and Wellington) - across from the war memorial. CALL FOR OUTREACH TO OTHER GROUPS Without official public consultations, environmental assessment and independent health and safety studies, many people within the Ottawa/Gatineau watershed are left in the dark about the proposed uranium mining and its consequences on their health and environment. Since informing everyone within Ottawa/Gatineau is a work of monumental proportions, OCAMU is asking groups and individuals to adopt this awareness raising campaign and do any type of outreach possible anywhere in Ottawa and Gatineau at any time. Contact us if you are looking for information material or if you want to organize an information presentation for your group. We must reach out to each other because our collective water supply is at stake. Losing water, we lose our very basis for survival. There is no safe amount of radioactivity or heavy metals. Even a bit of uranium mining is too much for too long. LET'S STOP IT BEFORE IT BEGINS.
